5.0 out of 5 stars Thank Goodness for the Reissue! September 20, 2010
Format:Audio CD
I've had the LP version of this since 1958 and it is scratched to death - and the cover is in tatters and almost in shreds! The original liner notes and disk lists have disappeared as has the little 'hanky' with all the musicians' signatures. I've looked for several years to find either the LP or a new CD - and NOW - great news. Thanks to Shout! factory for reissuing the great Bethlehem catalog gems! This is something special to be savored for generations of jazz aficionados!

This is a wonderful recording that presents the characters, music and story from Gershwin's "Porgy and Bess" in a new, more jazzy, setting. Far from being a "complete recording" of the opera (as stated in the listing copy), this is an edited reworking of the entire fact, it can't really be considered an opera any more, at all.
For example, gone are the recitatives of the characters in the original Opera, replaced here by Al Collins' able narration. This makes the story a lot clearer and more fluid for the listener, but severely truncates much of the brilliant music that underscored the original recitatives.
Gone also is the musical grandure of recordings of this work that use a full symphony and classically trained singers. Gershwin intended for P&B to be an OPERA after all, and the Bethlehem recording doesn't come close to capturing the panoramic awe of the original. That said, it does a marvelous job of re-casting the music in a jazz/big-band format, complete with some wailing instrumental solos by many of the famous jazz musicians on hand. The singing is also of a much more intimate, jazzy style which works well, considering how many of the tunes from this piece have become a part of the Great American Songbook.
Perhaps the best thing about this recording of Porgy and Bess is that it makes this complicated and often misunderstood work accessible to the average 21st century jazz listener. The story is engaging and the music swings...but calling it "the second-ever complete recording" (and thus implying that it is complete) is simply a lie, and does a diservice to both this recording, and Gershwin's original Jazz Opera.

5.0 out of 5 stars Loaded with talent from the jazz world January 4, 2009
Format:Audio CD
The remastered CD does not quite come up to the excellent recording standards found on the original Bethlehem recording, but the performaces from an all-star cast are outstanding, and not to be missed.
Well narrated.

5.0 out of 5 stars Garcia ROCKS!! March 3, 2010
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
Approximately 55 years ago, this recording was part of our fasmily's jazz collection. Twenty-five years ago, after I'd moved away and had my own family I paid a collector $40 for a vintge LP/album. Given that it is someplace in a box in my daughter's attic, AND that I no longer have a record player, you can imagine how happy I was to find a CD!

The quality is great, the prompt service from Amazon was supurb!
