The Porter-Cable 382 5-inch random orbit sander is equipped with a slew of features that make it ideal for any number of DIY and professional sanding applications. Ideal for fine sanding and finishing work thanks to its random-pattern sanding that doesn’t leave swirls or gouges in the material—be it metal, wood or composite—the 382 random orbit sander provides maximum sanding speed for smooth finishes. Porter-Cable’s Controlled Finishing System allows for controllable pad speed, especially during startup. Whether you’re preparing a surface for a coat of paint or stain, smoothing seams where pieces of material meet, or removing olds coats of paint or varnish from furniture, the 382 is the lightweight yet powerful random orbit sander to get the job done.

Powerful Sander for Fine Finishing

The 382 5-inch random orbit sander is equipped with a 1.9-amp motor that is capable of 12,000 OPM, allowing you to power through sanding applications big and small to as fine a finish as you need. Accepting 5-inch 8-hole hook-and-loop sandpaper, the 382 utilizes Porter-Cable’s Controlled Finishing System to maintain controllable pad speed and minimize gouging, making for a consistent finish and extra-smooth surface upon project completion. Its sealed 100-percent ball-bearing construction makes it sturdy and durable, but its lightweight design (it weighs just 3 pounds) and dual-plane counterbalanced fan reduce user fatigue. The switch is dust-sealed to prevent dust ingestion, increasing the switch’s working lifespan and ensuring long-term use job after job.

This was my second sander from porter cable. The first worked fine for about 10+ years. The pad eventually broke down and the replacement was more than 50% of a new sander. The new sander did not work as well as the old one. It did not seem to get the RPM's. I discovered the piece under the sanding pad to collect more dust was inhabiting the rpm's. I removed the piece and the rpm's were increased and seems to work much better. I also noticed that the new sander seemed to warm up more in my hand while running than the old one. I just finished my first project with the new sander and I'm pleased with it.

I am a home woodworker (although an avid one). When the electric version of the random orbital sander made it's appearance, I just had to have one. Watching Norm Abram use his (back in the mid 80's) convinced me that I needed one of those. At that time I bought a little 4 1/2" Ryobi which I used since those days and which has served me well. It still works, but it's quite ratty-looking, so I went ahead and bought this Porter Cable unit. Suffice it to say that random orbital technology has improved since the days when I bought the Ryobi. This unit is a no-frills orbital, and it works fine. There is little to complain about, and little to brag about. Just select the grade of sandpaper, stick it on the velcro, hit the switch and go to down. The positives are that my sander has not failed to perform, and the velcro grips the disks quite securely (something that was beginning to wear out on my old Ryobi). The negatives (and I don't mean that these are major problems)...the dust collection "retainer" box is flimsy, poorly attached, and fills up quickly. I don't really see a purpose for this, except that it gives the illusion that you won't have "fine sawdust problems" with this sander. I bumped mine against a faceframe while sanding a shelf, and the whole dust-box assembly popped off and fell on the floor spilling it's contents on the carpet. Just as well...it was packed full anyway and obviously wasn't functioning to collect sawdust at that point. I didn't even bother putting it back on. Second "con" that I have is that this unit would benefit from some kind of braking system (even if it were a manual brake). When you turn the power off, the thing continues to whirrrr and orbit for a bit before you can set it down.Read more ›

This Mdl 382 is okay, but my older PC Mdl 343 is, overall a better sander. The main issues are: 1. The newer model is not ergonomic, or at least not as much as the older model. It's just not comfortable to hold for an extended period of time. 2. The new model gets hot real quick. The top of the sander, right where you hold it gets hot after about 3 to 4 minutes of sanding. I'm an avid hobbyist woodworker and use the sander a lot. Seems like they made an error here - guessing they cut the cost of producing the sander.

My older sander's hook and loop pad went bad (for the second time) and it costs about $25.00 including shipping for a new pad, so I decided after 7 years or so, it was time for a new sander. Wrong move - should have ordered the new pad - actually, just as soon as I finish writing this review, I'll order the replacement pad and I'll have 2 sanders!

All-in-all I can't say the newer model isn't a decent sander, just not as comfortable to use as the older model.

I currently own the 343 type 2 model. Brushes wore out and decided to take a peek at the newer models. Knowing full well Black and Decker was already lowering the quality of Porter Cable in favor of their high end brand Dewalt. I was still hoping the woodworking stuff was decent. Boy was I wrong! Not only is the new model a total joke...compare for one minute the older 343 model with the CURRENT Dewalt (hint, it's a 343 in yellow). You are far better off with the Dewalt. And I'm buying brushes for my 343 sander.

Porter Cable still has some good/decent for the money stuff left (just got the hand planer and router)...but I don't think that will last too long under the leadership of Black and Decker. Some stuff might as well be labeled Skil, or worse, Black and Decker! Harbor Freight might have a better offering.

This sander is a wimp! 1,9 amp motor has no power at all. It looks like old 3 amp P-C sander and that's why I took the bait and made purchase. P-C 382 is not recommended!

The sander is a very nice and useable tool. I would recommend it. You need to be careful when removing the sandpaper -- the pad can tear.

It is not a bad sander, but it lacks the power of my Dewalt. The hook and loop
pad wen't on my Dewalt, that I have had for about 8 years did not want to spend
the money so I bought this one and------I have already ordered the new pad, I use
sanders non stop this one will never last me.
