This little beast will remove a lot of material quickly with a coarse grit sandpaper, and its vibrations are fine enough to make it an excellent finish sander, as well. I have a couple of beefs with it, though. First of all, it's heavy. The NiCad batteries aren't light, and the added weight of the tool itself makes for a pretty hefty chunk to move around. This sometimes makes my arm hurt, and I'm a big guy. Second, it's pretty bulky for a finish sander. The triangular tip makes getting between balusters a little better, but you probably won't strip poly from a floor all the way into the corner. Third, and this is my biggest complaint, is that this little guy is LOUD. It screams at you with its shrill whine "Hurry up and finish so I'll shut up!". I use earplugs when I use it, and I'm not normally concerned with such things. Lastly, the power switch is placed right on top, at the front of the handle, and I find myself accidentally shutting it off constantly, and having to restart it. It's a good sander, but it does have its faults. Such are the tradeoffs for cordless convenience, I guess. Still, it's a good price for a sturdy tool that's well made, even if it haunts your dreams with its banshee wail.

The little sander replaced a 22 year-old Makita corded palm sander I had. It is fast and powerful but doesn't have the torque a 110v unit has, I believe. I used all grits of paper and it becomes a handful when using 60-80 grit papers, so 'finish sander' is what it is. The cordless feature is wonderful because I can grab it and go sand without wrestling with a power cord, outlet, etc. I have a bunch of Porter cable 18v stuff, and with the exception of one DOA lithium battery, The product line is reliable. It's also a good value.

Porter Cable has never let me down and I have used this sander A LOT!!
I stripped my entire kitchen cabinets, stairwell banister and steps plus many other projects.
Battery time is great but do buy a couple of extra batteries. I have two extra batteries but I also own
every single 18v Porter Cable tool they sell.

I bought this for some future projects and haven't had too much time to try it out. But i tested it the other day and it worked great.

Very powerful and your arm will tire before you can get through two 18v ni-c batteries. Needs special velcro sandpaper tho.

Usually I am very happy with Porter Cable products...However, not in this case. On my 2nd use the motor seized and quit working all together. I was in the middle of redoing a piece of furniture, and I run to Lowes and buy a Bosch. One more thing, it was really hard to hold on too while sanding...it kept on wanting to get away from me. My hands would keep vibrating 10 minutes after I was done using it. Bottom line, I don't recommend this product.

I tried using this hoping that it would remove the paint outside of my house, but it just wasn't strong enough. I tried really hard to like it. I even used super coarse 36-grit and 12-grit paper thinking it was due to the paper strength. No go. Returning it and am going to try out the Bosch PSM 18 LI instead as it looks like the OPM specs are twice the speed.
