Here's an example: "POSCO attributed these improvements behind its 2000 record profitability to... a decrease in the cost of goods sold due to lower depreciation expenses..." Depreciation is never part of cost of goods sold; cost of goods sold are costs that are directly related to the goods produced, and incurred in the same period in which the goods are produced. Depreciation is related to investment in fixed assets in prior periods.
