5.0 out of 5 stars A quality, realistic guideline
I'm a long-time journalist who is on the receiving end of PR pitches, and this is
the book I wish the PR pros would read. It's obvious the author has worked in the real world. It's not a textbook full of theories but instead features specific ideas that can realistically be put in place. I think small business owners in particular stand to benefit from this book. Go...

1.0 out of 5 stars Too simplistic - better choices available
I own a small business and want to get better at PR. I bought several books, and this was the most shallow and least helpful. I would not recommend this one.

Go through, highlight a few ideas, follow the advice and I'm sure you'll see results.

5.0 out of 5 stars One of the Best, October 30, 2006
This review is from: PR Idea Book: 50 Proven Tools That Really Work (Paperback)
This book contains practical, usefu advice for both PR professionals working in large corporations as well as everyday people seeking to generate greater awareness for their scout troop, church, hobby club or small business. As a print communications professional, I've seen PR from both sides, and this book really demonstrates an understanding of how PR works and, more importantly, how to make it work for you. It provides the reader with techniques I've not seen written about elsewhere. The author really knows his stuff.

This review is from: PR Idea Book: 50 Proven Tools That Really Work (Paperback)
Winke's book reflects obviously tried-and-true experiences in the real world of public relations. These are strategies and tactics that work, and as a public relations/marketing professional myself, I can testify that Winke has done his homework. If you're seeking sensible--and clever--ways to jump-start your organization's PR efforts, start here before you begin thinking about reinventing the wheel. Highly recommended.

I've read the book, cover to cover. Fast, easy access to the kinds of public relations and communications information you want--without getting hung up on a lot of added talk.

Streamlined format makes for an easy read experience. Regardless of your setting, I'm in government, there's years of experience available to the reader--with an easy access format. You don't have to sequentially read until you bump into what you need. You want info on Fact Sheets, you can get to it in short order.

For the person who knows a little and maybe a lot, this book gets their thinking going and gives them a try this and try that ideas. It works with its menu of options. For the new learner who aspires to PR, it gives exposure to the things you need to know without teaching. If you're in the field, the book doesn't preach, just shares successful strategies that could work for you.

I'd recommend this book to the casual reader who wants to learn how it all works, as well as the seasoned professional.

2.0 out of 5 stars No great shakes, December 24, 2008
This review is from: PR Idea Book: 50 Proven Tools That Really Work (Paperback)
I'm a PR practitioner and was disappointed with the basic nature of the tools in this book. Many of them were PR 101. I'd recommend this book for someone who doesn't already work in the industry, such as a small business owner looking to try some ideas on their own.

The PR Idea Book is a great resource. As a small business owner, I appreciate having a book that's filled with useable ideas that can help me position my firm in the marketplace. I also recommend this book for community service groups wishing raise the visibility of their organizations. Winke's book is well-organized and easy to read. It's definitely becoming one of my go-to books. I have just ordered an additional copy for my home office as well.

I handle various PR and spokesperson duties. I find it
refreshing to have topics covered in 2-3 pages. We often
overlook the simple things in PR. Even if you have an agency that you work with, pick out 5-10 ideas and get busy with the execution.
