Those CDs are a must-have to those studying Chinese, a perfect companion to the "New Practical Chinese Reader Textbook Vol. 1". Whether you try a self-studying system or attend class lessons with a teacher, you will definitely be greatly helped by listening to the book dialogues and then to independent words such as the basic or "root" words. As you move forward from one lesson to the next, the dialogues go faster and faster till you get to speak in the same pace as a Chinese will do.

I have to say that listening to the CDs at home after my class lessons has helped me more than anything else.

I did not find the New Practical Chinese Reader to be a very good book for teaching yourself Chinese. It may work well in a classroom setting, but if you are trying to teach yourself a new language, this is not the book for you. It doesn't provide very good information when it comes to grammar or sentence structure. It focuses on mainly conversing with someone at a college or institution more than in the everyday world.

The New Practical Chinese Reader series takes extensive CSL research conducted at Beijing Language and Culture University and interprets into a compact, well-designed text that's suitable for University level classes, but may be to sophisticated for the high school level. Each lesson includes detailed grammatical analysis and useful tips for reading and writing Chinese. Overall a solid beginner's textbook.

I play these CD's whenever I am driving and I have noticed my prounciation has improved. My Chinese teacher rarely corrects my pronounciation when I have to read something in class. I notice the obvious pronounciation mistakes of my classmates. In particular, in my community college class there are a number of native Chinese Cantonese speaking students who speak litte English who are taking this basic Mandarin class in hopes of scoring an easy A to meet their second language requirement. While they can obviously read and write in Chinese, they grossly butcher pronouncing Mandarin expressions because they didn't buy and practice on the CD's. I wonder how it is possible to mispronunce certain words so incorrectly. Besides improving your pronounciation, using these CD's make it much easier to remember Pinyin. My previous problem in learning Pinyin is to remember what tone marks were needed with the Pinyin word. Now that my pronounciation has improved I can usually guess correctly what the proper tone mark has to be my pronouncing the word to myself. Finally, I find I don't have to study Chinese as much at home. When I use the CD's while driving it is time spent learning when I normally would not be studying. For my class, the CD's were not a requirement. In fact, I found these CD's on my own. I won't say these CD's are perfect. I think sometimes the longer dialogues should be a little slower with more pauses. Still, I really don't see how anyone who is using the Practical Chinese Reader text can do without the CD's. These CD's are a must buy.

High quality CDs. About the books: Although the topis are based on situations for university students, the book covers the 4 main skills (writing, reading, speaking and listening) in a very good way. The authors should include colorful photos in order to offer a more attractive material though.

It's good to be able to get familiar with the tone while driving. Too bad I didn't know that this item didn't come with the textbook, the description was not very clear.

It's amazing how these CD's can help us to learn the pronunciation of this difficult language. It's was very helpful.
