BEING A TRUSTWORTHY LEADER
INGER'S PROMISE will help emphasize the value of being trustworthy, and also investigate the lives of the Sami people of Norway.
Travel north to the Arctic Circle, where reliability can be a matter of survival.
With his white fur and mountain of antlers, Inger is a standout in the reindeer herd, so it's no surprise that he is chosen to pull the wedding sled and to run in the Alta River Race.
But when Inger twice disappoints his fans, everyone begins to agree with Old Moss: Inger just isn't trustworthy. Will Inger get a third chance to prove that he can be counted upon?
It takes a surprise spring snowstorm, a raging river, and a hungry wolf to set the stage for Inger's comeback. And this time-with three reindeer at risk-Inger sticks by his word.
Author Jami Parkison's story is set among traditional Sami reindeer herders in the Arctic region of Norway. It is a difficult life in a landscape full of peril, where keeping a promise can be a matter of life and death.
Against this backdrop of ice and snow, Jami describes the colorful Sami people and their antlered companions at Spring Festival in the town of Kautokeino and on the sometimes treacherous route of their annual migration to summer pastures.
This is an exciting tale of accepting challenges and earning trust. Children will love Inger and his story.
You can count on it!
A SURPRISE and added bonus is the "Enrichment Information" which includes lots of facts about the Arctic Circle, Lapland and Norway, reindeer, the small town of Kautokeino where our story takes place, and the steadfast Sami people. This is fascinating detail that did not make it into the story itself, but is very rich in colorful descriptions of Norwegian culture and daily life.
A second big plus is the "Letter to Parents and Educators" which includes many relevant questions and comments to facilitate conversation with the young reader about the message of the story - being trustworthy. So even though on the surface, this is just an engaging story for children, it is also truly helpful in a real way.
