Great book with tons of information for beginers,

This review is from: PROSPECTING FOR TROUT (An Orvis Guide) (Paperback)
This is a great book for the novice fly fisherman. It gives you tons of helpful hints on where to find trout and there feeding habits. It also gives you a birdseye view of what a trout will do throughout the entire day. This book also tells why the cast, presentation and choice of fly are so crucial when fishing an unknown stream. Also it shows you how to fish a stream once you have located feeding trout. All in all this is a great book for novice anglers and still offers some great advice for the expert fly fisherman

I think this book shows you the art and science of fly fishing. this one was best among the books I read for flyfishing. It changed what I see at the stream. After this book, the streams were not the same as I had seen before..

I have to agree that this is a great book. I bought it in my second season of trout fishing and I have used many of the outlined strategies to catch trout since that time. I highly recommend it.

A great guide to approaching the river in a strategic way with methods that can be adapted to whatever conditions you face on the water. I think it's the most useful book on the subject, and is great for anglers of any level of skill.

This book is a superb guide for all trout fisherman. It describes how exactly to fish for trout when they are not visible. It is especially valuable for the fisherman who fishes marginal streams that get a lot of fishing pressure like many near NYC.

This Book Is a Must,
By A Customer
This review is from: PROSPECTING FOR TROUT (An Orvis Guide) (Paperback)
Once you've figured out what rod, reel, line, leader, tippett, etc, to buy and you've learned to cast half way decently then this is THE book to buy. After you've finished reading it, go back and STUDY it. Excellent advice in a very readable straight forward manner.

Probably the best book available for finding the wiley trout,
By A Customer
This review is from: PROSPECTING FOR TROUT (An Orvis Guide) (Paperback)
First borrowed from the library, this is the definitive read on finding trout. I have used the tips and techniques offered by the author much to the chagrin of my fishing cohorts. More and larger fish have been this reviewer's reward for the time spent on this how-to manual. It is concise, well thought-out and accurate with it's instructions on where to find the fish you've been learning to cast to. It has plenty of suggestions on what fly to use as well. All the casting skill in the world will not bring a trout to hand if your fly is floating over barren water. I highly recommend it as a streamside companion on those days when you feel the frustrations of a slow day taking the fun out of the sport. Since reading this book, I've recommended it to many and given a few as gifts. Owning this book is like that favorite music CD you want everyone to enjoy as much as you do; you end up buying multiple copies just so you'll have one of your own. (Why do you think Fleetwood Mac sold so many copies of "Rumors"?)

Practically a trout fishing bible...,

This review is from: PROSPECTING FOR TROUT (An Orvis Guide) (Paperback)
...at least in the context of non-hatch times. Since most of my fishing is not done on classic waters during famous hatches, this book is absolutely indispensible. It does not go into the fundamentals of what line and leader are or how to cast, but instead it basically tells you how to fish - how to determine the characteristics of the water and trout, and then how to fish for them.

Excellent!,

Very easy to read and well laid out. A brilliant book for beginners like me, keen to learn not just the right techniques, but also the theory behind them.

If you want to learn to catch trout in almost any situation you will encounter then this is the book for you. Written in Tom's low-key style. Solid information. I have been trout fishing, and reading trout fishing books for forty years. I learned more from this book than anything else I ever read. Another must have is Rosenbauer's "Reading Trout Streams.
