5.0 out of 5 stars The GREATEST German Death/Thrash Metal band ever!!!!, January 3, 2012

(REAL NAME)
This review is from: PROTECTOR - Golem / Leviathan's Desire Bonus Tracks (Audio CD)
Many of you reading this probably are already familiar with the legendary German Thrash/Proto-Death Metal group PROTECTOR so I'm going to keep this rather short as there is much great info. online about the group. BUT, if this is your first encounter with PROTECTOR here's the scoop. They formed late-'85/early '86 and were immediately ahead of the German Thrash pack so to say. Faster, more technical, and better recorded than far more "famous" (or at least well known due to better worldwide distribution of their LPs) groups circa '86-89 such as KREATOR, SODOM, ASSASSIN, DESTRUCTION, VIOLENT FORCE, etc. PROTECTOR had more in common with proto-death thrashers such as Sweden's MERCILESS("The Awakening" era), San Francisco's INSANITY, the East Coast USA group ATROCITY(who possessed some of the same "punkiness" as PROTECTOR but not quite the musical chops and killer tunes), SOME of DESEASED's mid-80's material, France's MASSACRA(another group who in a perfect world would be as well known as KREATOR, SEPULTURA, etc.), fellow German underground legends POISON and MINOTAUR(although PROTECTOR had VASTLY superior releases when it comes to production and engineering and were tighter than both, especially MINOTAUR, who are essential historically to Germany's death-thrash era evolution but were at times a little too chaotic), Australia's short-lived SLAUGHTER LORD(if only they had been able to record a full-length with the production quality of PROTECTOR's "Golem" LP!), Mexico's MORTUARY(who released only one classic LP in 1990 called "Blackened Images"), and South American groups like PENTAGRAM, SADISM, etc. So PROTECTOR's style was mega-aggressive HIGH speed thrash with killer songwriting, and exceptional musicianship(often ahead of its time technically). This high-grade musicianship made PROTECTOR capable of pulling off dramatic tempo-changes which even in spite of the high speeds give their songs a tremendously heavy feel. This aspect is one of many that sets PROTECTOR apart from so many of the Slayer-worshipping and often thinnly produced, weak sounding thrash groups of the mid-latter-80s. This particular CD(which is WAY TOO expensive by the way, so look around online and you'll find these PROTECTOR releases in much more affordable versions) features PROTECTOR's debut LP masterpiece "Golem" from 1988(truly an ESSENTIAL LP in the history of extreme heavy metal in the pre-modern death metal era-the greatest era of all in my opinion...) released by Atom H Records(and featuring killer original vocalist Martin Missy) and their 1990 long-play 5 track EP "Leviathan's Desire"(featuring new vocalist Oliver Wiebel-a different styled vocalist than Martin Missy, but talented in his own right). There are also 3 tracks off PROTECTORS's to this day stunning debut "Misanthropy" EP from early 1987(why only 3 of the 5 tracks from the EP are included is a mystery and shame, as all 5 original tracks off "Misanthropy" are legendary). So basically this CD release is PROTECTOR's vinyl/CD releases from 1987-1990 MINUS their also classic 2nd LP "Urm The Mad" (with M. Missy on vocals) from 1989. It's a GREAT introduction to this SO important, influential, and criminally over-looked band. If you're new to German 80's thrash or love LPs like KREATOR's first 3 LPs or SODOM-"Persecution Mania", then you will be absolutely AMAZED when you hear what these maniacs from PROTECTOR were doing during the same time period. DO NOT HESITATE! If their were a death/thrash Hall Of Fame PROTECTOR would be first ballot inductees...And don't forget to eat your "Space Cake" before headbanging to oblivion.
