5.0 out of 5 stars Protein Counter
After recently having wt. loss surgery, it has become necessary to learn foods that were high in protein. This book was very helpful in finding the protein count I needed.

3.0 out of 5 stars You won't believe what they include!
This book is certainly complete, although I think they could include values for smaller portions to make it easier to calculate some things. It does the job though. However, I got even more then I expected from this book because now I know that squirrel has less calories then Opossum or Muskrat. No, I am not kidding! Frog legs? Yep, they're included! I also learned that...

4.0 out of 5 stars The Protein Counter, January 9, 2007
My husband needs to control the amount of protein he eats a day. This book is excellent for this purpose. It's easy to use and very complete. It also includes the calories and fat grams for all the items listed as well as brand name items and restaurant chain foods.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Reference, January 5, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This was interesting to read and I keep it on me for using while I am away. This makes for great reference for my protein intake at different restaurants. I have found some discrepancies in the amount of protein listed in some foods vs the list of what my bariatric center had given me, but this is not a big deal. The book says certain servings are actually higher in protein than what I have, but for reference, this book is very good.

4.0 out of 5 stars Very good, but could be improved, June 15, 2007

At first blush this thick paperback made me think every food in the world must be in it! And a lot of food is (after all, where could you find the nutrition count of muskrat?!). I love the listings of chicken, for example, by the part or by the weight. And there is nutrition information for a lot of fast food and other dining places, too, which is great. I also love that the nutrition counts just don't focus on protein, but give other nutrients, and also calories.

But just the day after I got the book I discovered two omissions that I think are rather significant: only one or two Boca products are listed (this is a textured soy protein). I wanted to make chili with Boca crumbles and to see what the protein counts were on other Boca products and most were not available. (Yes, I know I can look at the label after I purchase the product. Or stand in the store and compare.)

Another omission was anything from Red Lobster. It seems like it would be easy to obtain the information (from any major restaurant chain) and include it. I wanted to be prepared before I dined there, so I would know what some good choices were. Again, I can obtain the information by going to their website (I hope), but that defeats the purpose of having the book!

1.0 out of 5 stars A calorie counter with a different title, December 26, 2008
By

I just received this as a gift and will be returning it. It is NOT a protein counter like it advertises, instead it is just a regular calorie counting book that just happens to include calories, protein, fat and carbs, in that order. All the foods listed are in ALPHABETICAL ORDER ONLY. I was expecting foods to be listed in order of protein per serving, since protein is what I am most concerned with and that is what the title lead me to believe. I understand that having foods ALSO listed in alphabetical order can come in handy, but the way it is makes it EXTREMELY time consuming to find the highest protein foods available, which is what I want. If anyone DOES know of a book that lists foods in the order of how much protein is in each serving (highest to lowest would be the best) please reply to my post with the title, it will help me tremendously. Thank you.
