What's the point of getting this "outdated" system?, June 12, 2002
This review is from: PS One & LCD Screen Combo (Video Game)
I always wanted to get this combo deal since I saw how small it is. However, I was pulled back by its price and the fact that I own two PS2(domestic/import) and one universal original PlayStation. Seriously, it will be a total waste of money to get another PSOne. I guess, however, the timing was everything. After I read one of the reviews, which was written wholeheartedly, on the day Sony announced price drop ..., gave me enough push to get this combo deal. Am I satisfied? Yes, definitely. First of all, I would like to tell you how crispy and vibrant the graphic is. I couldn't believe how much of insane quality graphic this small screen was able to squeeze out, you gotta see for yourself to believe. I was totally amazed by the quality, which I didn't expect at all. If I have to point out something negative, it would have to be this 'angle' you have to adjust for maximum viewing. It's like this big projection tv, where you have to sit and look at it from certain angle to avoid strange glare. My other complaint has to be the length of the power cord, it's on bit short side. But trust me, that's a really minor thing, really. How about sound quality? I would have to say it's more than enough to fully enjoy your game in everyway you can think of. Not only it lets you use headphone, but also you can control your volume as well. Of course, it doesn't provide like surround system or dolby digital/dts quality sound, but I don't think any of PSOne games support that anyway (may be except Final Fantasy series with dolby surround). The strange thing is that I began to play all those PSOne games I didn't care to play before. I guess I'm sort of like a selective gamer, who plays games till the end when and only I find them worth playing till the end. However, this thing is so cute and so, so... WONDERFUL, it enchants those "worthless" games more "worthwhile", really, there's nothing like playing "less" worth games right before bed time.. I've been carrying it to library to play during break time or workplace. It's very portable too. I am a big shooter fan and I replayed Striker 1945. The good thing was that import version supports arcade screen, which let you play as it is in arcade, typical vertical shooter. That's impossible with normal tv because you are not gonna put your tv on side way to play vertical shooter as it is, are you? However, all you have to do with PSOne was just rotate the whole thing, and there you go, you can play Striker 1945 vertically, as it is!!! You might say what's the big difference, it's just little sacrifice on the side with normal screen. Trust me, it makes a big difference especially for games like Striker 1945. (by the way, I found out that domestic version doesn't have that arcade screen support, doh!) Now, to conclude this, I need to answer this one question: was it worth buying another system you own when the only difference is the size and this little screen? My answer is definitely YES and I just don't know why, but playing games on PSOne screen makes tremendous difference, don't know why but that's way it is. Now, you can play your RPGs or even Fighting games (Street Fighter Alpha 3 looks GOOD!) while you are in the bed... Wow...what can you ask for more when you have this sturdy system with high quality mini screen? Trust me, you are getting what you are paying for. GET IT TODAY!!

Astonishing...can't be put down, April 6, 2002

This review is from: PS One & LCD Screen Combo (Video Game)
First of all, before I forget - in reply to the previous question, yes this system does come with an AC power adapter. This system is amazing. You've seen the more recent version of the Playstation one in stores, "wow" you think, "it is pretty small". Wait until you slide this beauty out of the box...it is smaller than you think, and incredibly study. It's white color makes it come off as very clean and non flashy. A great surprise-the system is put together, all you need to do is hook in the AC cord, plug it into the wall, plug in the controller, pop in a game, and you're ready to go literally within 30 seconds of removing it from the box. You press power...and oh my gosh. The screen is brilliant, deep crisp colors...you get pulled into the game without straining your eyes or even realizing you're viewing a smaller screen. Unless you have a flat [$] TV, the picture doesn't compare to television gaming. You won't even want to use the TV anymore, however, that is an option. Bring this with you to hotels for when you're sitting around bored. Get a rechargable battery pack for [$] for full portability and be the envy of everyone on the airplane. I bought the Sony made car adapter for [$] and I know it will come in incredibly handy for long car trips. Now for the sound...in my book, it is almost comparable to small Bose technology. It will just blow you away that such power and depth is coming out of such tiny speakers. Sounds great with headphones as well so you won't disturb others - but in my opinion close to as good without headphones. The screen folds down very snugly and will by no means pop back up, until you pop it up yourself (unless you're being extremely rough with it of course). All this and I am a girl, I'm a girly girl who doesn't get into video games too much. I have an old Nintendo 64 that never gets used, and some game boys that I used to use for after exams in school. Though, for some reason, when I saw this, I had to get it. It's looks alone are so appealing...it's performance however, will blow you away. Get a headphone splitter and extra controller and you and a friend, sibling or family member, can play together...or you can offer a game to your neighbor on the plane. This compact console will EASILY fit in your carryon, with no problem at all. No need to bring this AND an audio CD walkman-the Playstation will play your CDs through the headphones or speakers itself. Now how cool will it be when they make Playstation 2 really tiny, and you can watch DVDs on the screen AND play games. Some inexpensive trial games I've bought (all you gamers are going to think I have the worst taste) are: -Sydney 2000 Olympics-which i do like because there is a lot of different games...but you use the same controls over and over and over -Croc: Legend of the gobbos-this is a cool mario like game, -Razor Freestyle Scooter-my first purchase because it was under [$] and I had just spent [$] on the PS, I didn't wanna push it before I had even tested it out..and I actually like the game, it is a lot like Tony Hawk, only more cartoonish..I think it's a good girls game -Crash Team Racing-this is a Crash Bandicoot racing game, like Mario Kart or Diddy Kong racing. Good game if you like those types. -Saltwater Sport Fishing-another one under ten dollars...and to be honest, I like it. It's not much of a challenge, but it's fun and it is exciting to see how much your fish weighs haha -Tekken 3-This is the best one and I think a lot of people will agree with me...it's hard to put the PS down, especially with this game. A really creative fighting game. One other good thing about this console is that while the bottom gets warm, it doesn't get scorching hot in the least bit. It's a beauty, and if I can get into it, anyone can. It makes a great gift to someone else, or for yourself. Don't just get the Playstation and not the screen because you will be completely missing out on some of the best parts about it. If you're thinking about getting one, go get it, reward yourself and splurge a little. My rating is undoubtedly a solid five.

Best Semi-Portable System, August 14, 2003
This review is from: PS One & LCD Screen Combo (Video Game)
Great combo, light, easy to use. The screen made all those bad PlayStation graphics disappear! Wonderful color and resolution, just not the best when viewed from all angles. I played games such as Quake II, Final Fantasy VII and Diablo and the graphics were smooth without jaggies like on a regular TV. Tricked me into thinking it was PS2 and not old PS. Plus you can read all text nice and clear in RPG's and such. Headphone jack too for good quality sound although speakers arn't too shabby. Plays CD's and PlayStation Games (that's a lot). The PSOne and screen is great for trips and such. If you buy this item I would recommend: 1. PSOne Car Adapter - Makes device Portable. Plugs into any cigarette-type outlet in car, even to socket on airplanes (check below your seat next time)! 3. PSOne Island Blue Dual Shock Controller (Awesome color) 2. PlayStation Memory Card (Light Gray or Island Blue) 4. PSOne Deluxe Carrying Case (Made by various companies) 5. 1/8" (Headphone jack type) Camcorder Stereo A/V Cable (Ask for at any Radio Shack, they will have it. This is ALL you need to hook up a DVD Player, VCR, etc. to the screen's AV IN. You don't need any PS2 cables or whatever described in another review.)
