Product Description

The PSB Alpha PS1 takes its most popular Alpha Series concept to an entirely new level by building a high performance amplifier into the left speaker to make a versatile desktop solution with enough acoustic output to rock a small to medium sized room. The Alpha PS1 Powered Speakers are engineered for the true-to-nature sound for which PSB is known. Many small speakers employ tricks like exaggerating the treble or falsely boosting bass to overcome limitations and poor performance, but not so with the Alpha PS1. Using sound research and exhaustive testing at Canada's National Research Council in the nation's capital of Ottawa, the PSB team has designed the Alpha PS1 with extremely smooth and refined sound. You'll be pleasantly surprised by its output capability and solid tuneful bass response that belies the Alpha PS1's diminutive size. The response off to the sides of the speaker has the same smooth response as the sound directly in front, making the Alpha PS1s acoustically 'disappear' by projecting a large and exquisitely detailed sound image-a PSB performance hallmark. This is no ordinary computer speaker!Simply plug your computer, game console, tablet or smart mobile device into the Alpha PS1 and you have a complete sound system-one with a high-end audio pedigree. For the ultimate in gaming excitement and dramatic home theater effects, an optional powered subwoofer can easily be added by connecting to the convenient subwoofer output. The volume control will now adjust the

I was using a pair of Audioengine A2 before I had these for my computer listening. I do recommend the Audioengines ($199), they are now hooked up to my laptop. However, these are just astounding for $100 bucks more. I do have them paired with a sub woofer, which I also recommend doing. They have a subwoofer out RCA which is really awesome.

The soundstage and clarity on these are phenomenal, very neutral. The build quality is absolutely top notch.

Only gripe but minimal, is volume control on the back. This can be remedied with a keyboard with volume control or this little trinket is awesome... Volume Controller Fostex Pc-1e (W) White

I highly recommend any PSB product, the price point to quality ratio is fantastic!

Nothing against the SQ of these PSBs itself, but got a chance to compare side by side - do an A/b on same source with the Emotiva Airmotiv 4s. The Airmotiv 4s have better base definition, slightly clearer / may be extended treble response and in my eyes and handling slightly better build quality. Also the Airmotivs are independently powered, Each speaker has their own built in bi-amped amps powered by a built-in toroidal transformer ( regular 3 pronged A/C cord), has XLR inputs for studio monitoring purposes, several frequency equalization adjustments. Emotivas regularly go on sale for 10 to 20% listed prices putting it at par with the PSBs. If these PSBs were priced at $199 then these do deserve 4 or 5 stars, but not at these prices when you have much better options out there. my 2c.

I just recently purchased this set to replace an old Razer Mako 2.1 system. I originally wanted a decent system in the $200 - $400 price range with comparable to 300 watts. I originally was considering the Audioengine A5+ system, but after reading some reviews I heard that the bass was on the weak side. I stumbled on these speakers. I actually had the opportunity to test these and the bass is nothing compared to the Mako's, but the PS1 redeemed itself with a sub-woofer output, which means that you can connect a proper external sub-woofer to this system! Currently I have an 800 watt Mirage MM-6 attached to these speakers and they far surpass the old Mako system (Of course since now the entire system costs about $1000). The sound quality is extremely clean and precise, which PSB prides itself on. I would advise purchasing this because of their versatility, if you're not into big boomy bass then the speakers have exquisite sound clarity. If you like a lot of bass, add on you're favorite powered sub-woofer and away you go!

P.S. I compared these to the B&W (Bowers & Wilkins) MM-1 and the Bose C-5 (Companion 5) I liked the clarity better on the PS1s than the other two, and the PS1s do carry more bass than the MM-1s, but of course the C5s have the most bass (if you don't get a sub-woofer for the PS1s). Only the PS1s allow an external powered sub-woofer.

Alright. Let's talk turkey.

I was using the Klipsch Promedia 2.1 system on my computer before this and didn't like the 'boomy' sound of the sub (high resonance at certain frequencies). Also, people say that the connectors are prone to breakage. My sister mailed them cross-country and the particleboards were peeling off when they got here. They are nice speakers but not the best construction.

So I decided to take a step "up" as it were and was considering these as well as others mentioned.

They sound nice. Very nice in fact. Smooth frequency response. Noticing things in my music I hadn't noticed before. Read about PSB or watch the UTube videos from the founder where he explains why this is.

I bought a used PSB sub from eBay to pair with them, and together the sound is obviously superior to the Klipsch Promedia (however, this system cost over 3x what that system costs).

But they weren't as *loud* as Klipsch.

I considered sending them back for the Emotiva's (basically for more volume), but I want to use them for workshops and they are smaller and lighter and come in a box with a handle for easy transport. And paired with a sub, the system sounds big enough for my purposes as it is.

Pros:
- Fairly small (smaller/lighter than some similarly priced speakers which can be a positive or a negative)
- Subwoofer output (theoretically, you could get this by just splitting your output, as they just pass on the full spectrum anyway and let the sub do the crossover)
- Flat (very realistic) frequency response

Cons:
- Not as ear-splittingly loud as competition
- Will not power or charge my iPhone via USB (dang!)
- Comes with super cheap 3.5mm cable (really guys?)
- No grills (keep away from children!)
- 15 deg stand costs an extra $30

I just purchased these speakers to replace some older, faltering Audioengine A5s for my desktop. Please note that the latest iteration of these speakers feature an auto standby mode--not a power switch. Within 48 hours of using them, the speakers began cutting off the sound on their own, as if they were struggling to pick up the signal from the source (the speakers automatically go into standby mode when they don't sense a signal). I've had to disconnect and reconnect the speakers multiple times from the power source to try to reset them back to normal. This is not what I expected of $299 PC speakers, or for that matter $600 speakers when you add the mandatory matching subwoofer and matching speaker stands. I may have to return the entire set--TBD.

UPDATE: I've chosen to return the speakers because of the ongoing intermittent signal loss. I've decided to purchase replacement Audioengine speakers instead.
