If you've ever stared at a carousel in amazement and wondered what the history behind it was, you'll find much to love in this book. Author Richard A. Gardner describes in detail everything about the Philadelphia Toboggan Company, from the company's beginnings in 1904 to its subsequent rise to fame in the 'Golden Age' of carousels. However, this book really begins to shine when the author describes each carousel in PTC's long and storied history, many are still operational and some are in the process of being restored while some, sadly, are lost or have been destroyed. The author has included hundreds of photos to go along with the description of many of the carousels and they are as varied and richly detailed as the majestic machines themselves. Some of the photos take up entire pages of the book, pages well over 10 inches in length, and are really quite enjoyable to look at and inspect for all their intricacies.

All in all, this is a thoroughly researched book on a subject that is not familiar to most readers. It is evident the author put serious effort into documenting each and every carousel and it shows. I read the book for its history on PTC carousels but I kept coming back for the exquisite photos. My advice, take a journey with Mr. Gardner and discover the rich and beautiful history of the Philadelphia Toboggan Company for yourself!

The PTC machines are some of the most finely-carved works of carousel art ever produced. Unlike other early carousel companies, PTC actually numbered their units and (to some extent) kept records of them. This facilitates assembling a history of a given carousel. In this book, the author gives a good bit of information about carousels, and the Philidelphia Toboggan Company in particular.

However, the best part is that he goes, unit by unit, through every machine they were known to have produced.
It's a little sad to see how many were burned, destroyed, or auctioned off, but it's exciting to see several in storage and quite a few restored and back in service. After reading the book, we found PTC #45 in the Seattle zoo, and took a trip across the state to ride it. Wonderful fun!

This is more of a picture book/coffee table book than a serious scholarly work. Nevertheless, the photos are very well done, and there's a good bit of information sandwiched in a fairly slim volume. Well worth the price, in my opinion! :-)

Richard Gardner is a highly educated history buff who draws you into the beauty and significance of carousels in US culture. His study is about American (originating in Philadelphia) carousels and anyone who has been on one knows how special these antiques are ... painted in their original form, with their detail in tact. They're magical. Traveling in France with my daughter, who now lives in Bordeaux, I marveled that every French City had a cathedral, a carousel and central fountain ... this architectural standard led me to read about OUR carousels and how and why they were created. Not only a recreational past time, they tell a story about our country's history. I highly recommend you read Mr. Gardner's book and put it on your coffee table to share with family and friends. Everyone who visits my home picks it up and finds it interesting! Thanks, Richard Gardner!!! Write another book soon; I'll buy it! Sincerely (a big fan), Sheridan

This is a book that you will treasure and continue to enjoy long after receiving it. Flipping through the pages is like walking through a gallery of carousels - the photography is stunning. As well as being a beautiful book, it also takes you through the history of the each of the 75 PTC Carousels up to their current status (operational; in storage or under restoration; or lost/destroyed/dispersed) and present-day location. It is a great reference book as well as an excellent coffee table/conversation book. The author has done a fantastic job in chronicling and photographing these classic works of art.

This is a rich study of the world of PTC Carousels that is informed by the author's clear passion for the subject matter. Beautifully rendered photographs accompany self-contained vignettes that help this book do double duty as both an authoritative reference work and delightful "scrapbook" of a bygone era. Open to any page and start reading -- you'll find yourself still absorbed an hour later. A terrific gift idea for carousel afficionados or first-timers.

The book was as stated; in new condition and it has met my expectations. The shipping cost was ridiculous and I probably will avoid suppliers that don’t offer reasonable shipping solutions.

Amazon is a great company but beware of the overinflated shipping costs is my advice. The book is fantastic and a great addition to my Carousel Art.
