Received my volume: it's beautiful, an excellent Bible., September 15, 2011
This review is from: PTL Parallel Bible (Large Print) (Leather Bound)
I am extremely happy with the PTL Parallel Bible that I purchased here through Amazon.
I believe there are a number of different versions being offered from this one page, that is,
while they are all, in fact, PTL Parallel Bibles, with the KJV and Living Bible (a simple paraphrase
version of the Bible making it highly readable to new believers or young folk), they
have different bindings, from a hard-cover that is covered with leather, and then the Leather soft-cover
volume that I received, and the perhaps some simulated leather options. Also, some of the versions
were special anniversary editions containing many photos of Jim and Tammy Bakker, and other known
figures having to do with the Evangelical Christian World including Ronald Reagan and Roy Rogers,
(and maybe Billy Graham?).
My version did NOT come with the photo supplement of the above figures. I happen to be very happy about
that as I, personally, was not looking for the photo version. However, I bought a version for my friend
and had it shipped separately and hers DID have the photos, and she said she is quite pleased with it,
despite having no leaning toward televangelists or celebrities, but simply enjoys it as a visual historical
part of the volume. She loves here version also. I bought both right off this same Amazon spot. Both were
listed as "very good" condition, and each coming from different vendors.
I happen to prefer SUPPLE LEATHER bibles, easy to read in bed, or otherwise. However I have many hard bound
bibles i enjoy as well as paper backs, handy for slipping in a back pack, or back pocket. So I was happy
that my volume was, in fact, the supple leather type. I had a bit of trouble figuring out the terminology on
this and, in fact, did not know, until it arrived, what form or even color (black) mine might be. My friend's
was red (or perhaps maroon or burgandy).
TEXT SIZE: the text size is LARGE print, but NOT "GIANT". i use the maximum strength reading glasses to read anything
and this Bible is very very easy to read, but i can't read without reading glasses anymore. I wanted LARGE or
GIANT and I was happy with the size.
SIZE OF THE BIBLE: the size of the Bible is bigger than a classic home study bible, which I like, but not
unwieldy in any way. it' bigger than my original Open Bible KJV that i bought some 33 years ago. I'll include
photos for comparison if I can, including text size, and also showing text sized compared to a dollar bill and a
quarter as references. i'll also have photos of the Bible with my Open Bible (a classic home Study Bible size)
propped up behind it, and a normal full sized bible one might bring to church (not compact sized, but not a study bible)
along side also, showing text size and volume size.
TRANSLATION OR VERSION: the Living Bible is a paraphrase that is excellent for someone that has difficulty understanding
the thick King James English (i happen to adore the King James English), or for getting a different "interpretation" of
a difficult to comprehend passage of scripture, as long as one simply remembers it is, in fact, a paraphrase. It is as if you are at church, and a pastor is retelling a chapter of the Bible in their own words, as is very common in churches (e.g., the Pastor reads the chapter in KJV or NIV or NAS or whatever, and then retells the chapter in their own vernacular whether that is rap street talk, or young iPod generation talk, or Hawaiian Pidgin dialect, or any manner of speaking. Koine Greek, by the way, was a very street-level people's language period of Greek, not like Classical Greek, so language of the common people is exceedingly appropriate. I doubt if Mark, Matthew, or Moses wanted only literary snobs to comprehend the Bible. On the other hand I enjoy Shakespearean English, personally, and the literary poetic handling of the KJV).
Personal Note on the Living Bible paraphrase. I think it is useful handy and in many cases excellent as a paraphrase. I do think however there are actual translations, including the New Living Translation (made by the same group) and other actual translations that read as easy as the Living Bible paraphrase. Therefore I encourage people to also
explore the People's Parallel Translation version that came after the subject one, but using the NLT instead of the Living Bible in parallel with the KJV. Personally, I'm curious which is the most readable, yet most accurate, of all the more
modern English translations and I've been trying to study this. Since I'm fine with the KJV English, plus I study Biblical Hebrew and hope to start on Aramaic and Greek, I'm comfy with my parallel Hebrew-Aramaic-English and Greek-English parallels that I also use. but i'm interested in the answer to: what is the most readable, yet most accurate, modern English translation?
Blessings everyone and shalom,
rory
