1.0 out of 5 stars Stop working after 2 1/2 years. $250+ to fix., May 10, 2010
This review is from: PVM1870SMSS%2D Profile Spacemaker Series%2D 1%2E8 Cu%2E Ft%2E XL1800 Microwave Oven %2D Stainless Steel
I purchased GE Profile suite series made in Aug of 2007, one item being the GE Profile 1.8 cu. ft. Over-the-Range Microwave Oven Model PVM1870SMSS. It has been in use about 2 1/2 years and suddenly stopped working i.e. heating. Nothing heats in the microwave oven now. Everything else works fine.

I called Customer Service as this should be under warranty. The Profile line is their "top of the line" product and at the price it is, should definitely last longer than 2 1/2 years. It seems like the magnetron tube has gone out from what I am reading. The part is covered under warranty, but I will have to pay labor. GE wants to charge $100 to send out a service tech plus labor.

Very disappointed that this high end appliance has not lasted very long. Did not have excessive use as I have a household of 1. Isn't something being done about this. GE shouldn't have so many complaints regarding magnetron tubes. They should last longer than 2 1/2 years! I see hundreds of complaints here regarding same issue.

I has an old Emerson counter top that laster 14+ years. I will not buy GE anymore and will need to file an official complaint.

1.0 out of 5 stars DANGEROUS, CAUSED A FIRE, CLASS ACTIONLAWSUIT, January 12, 2011
This review is from: PVM1870SMSS%2D Profile Spacemaker Series%2D 1%2E8 Cu%2E Ft%2E XL1800 Microwave Oven %2D Stainless Steel
Ge profile model pvm1870sm1ss, transformer had to be replaced within the first few months, back in 08, On dec 24, Christmase eve the microwave caught fire, thankfully the breaker flipeed and cut the power, but by that time my home was full of noxious smoke, burned by throat and eyes. The kids and I got out ok and I called the fire department. The kids, the dogs, cat, my friend and her son all waited for the fire department in her minivan because it is was so cold out. WE called GE, they put us in touch with their Electric insurance, they had an attorney call us putting us on the spot trying to get a monetary value out of us. Then Chubb insurance called us telling us they worked for Samsung, Thats when it went from bad to worse. The Ge tech verified it was their faulty malfuntioning part a transformer/magnatron. Chubb has been giving us a hard time. Denying food bills since we couldn't cook, denying babysitting because we had to get the kids out of the house while we aired it out and cleaned, denying everything! Please tell everybody you know to gooogle class action law suit against GE and see how many attorneys, class actions, and people have been dealing with this problem. So do you have any advise for how to deal with this mess? GE doesn't care, Samsung doesn't want to hear it, and Chubb doesn't want to pay!

1.0 out of 5 stars Grill assembly broke twice within 1 year, January 22, 2011
This review is from: PVM1870SMSS%2D Profile Spacemaker Series%2D 1%2E8 Cu%2E Ft%2E XL1800 Microwave Oven %2D Stainless Steel
The microwave and the vent work great. However, the issue to be aware of is the poorly made/design grill assembly at the top of the microwave. The case is made of plastic even though the cover is stainless steel. The grill opens and closes every time the microwave or the vent is used. The first time I saw this I already suspect this could be problematic given the number of times it opens and closes in a day. Then, 6 months later the plastic pieces in the casing broke, and the grill actually fell over my cooktop. I called GE they sent a replacement grill - great! Installed it and it broke again 4 months later, a week just after 1-year warranty expires. Now, I am at at a point where I'm not sure I should keep buying the spare grill that costs ~$150 or just get a different microwave altogether.

Although this is a nice design from the look that keeps the microwave look really neat. However, I would prefer fewer moving parts, or better build quality on the part that has to move at least 3-4 times a day. Imagine every time the microwave runs, the grill opens up, and when it finishes the grill closes. Using vent is also the same way. It seems trouble is waiting to happen.

This review is from: PVM1870SMSS%2D Profile Spacemaker Series%2D 1%2E8 Cu%2E Ft%2E XL1800 Microwave Oven %2D Stainless Steel
The GE Profile Microwave PVM 1870 series was designed to vent in two places: a hidden vent on top which goes to the outside, and a vent on the front that opens everytime the microwave is turned on, and vents into the room. This front vent is made of cheap plastic, and has broken twice in 6 months. Two times the plastic which hold the springs that allow the vent to open broke. And once the entire vent cover broke off while I was cooking. GE should redesign this vent cover and replace them all. I expect mine will continue to break off on a regular basis. It seems like it is designed to do so.

My husband installed it and the light underneath would not shut off...not only that, the vent started to continuously open and close on its own. Very frustrated sent it back and bought a different one at Best Buy for $130 cheaper and I love it :-)

1.0 out of 5 stars Pretty to look at - but NOT durable, December 12, 2011
This review is from: PVM1870SMSS%2D Profile Spacemaker Series%2D 1%2E8 Cu%2E Ft%2E XL1800 Microwave Oven %2D Stainless Steel
Bought full complement of GE Profile appliances w/ house Nov 2007. Within a year, the microwave turntable motor went out. 4 years later no turntable again, but this time not the motor, probably the control board. Cheaper to buy new QUALITY appliances when the time comes. Cant help but think this is planned obsolence so we continue to buy repair parts.

This review is from: PVM1870SMSS%2D Profile Spacemaker Series%2D 1%2E8 Cu%2E Ft%2E XL1800 Microwave Oven %2D Stainless Steel
I bought the same model but black Sept 2010. Worked six months and stopped heating. GE replaced three parts, one being the tube. Yesterday three months after it was repaired it stopped heating again. Waiting to have it serviced again. Only have three months left on warrenty. The labor gets very expensive when warrenty is up.

This microwave is made in Malaysia. I was told by the repairman that it is made by samsung.

I will not buy another GE product.
