Amazon.com Review

Released in November 1997, the original PaRappa the Rapper was lauded for its simple gameplay and unique setting. One of the first rhythm games to hit the American market, it required gamers to match onscreen commands à la Simon Says. Its accessible gameplay, combined with an offbeat story (a rapping canine trying to win the heart of a flower), songs, and characters made it a hit. Now in PaRappa the Rapper 2, Sony brings back its old dog to the PS2, but doesn't bother to teach him new tricks. It's a fun but short game that anyone can play. However, fans of the original may be disappointed that Sony hasn't advanced the series much in the last four years (28 in dog years).

This time around PaRappa must stop the evil Noodle Syndicate that's turning all the food in the world into noodles. The wacky story unfolds in Rodney Greenblat's unique visual style. The playful graphics are 2-D with heavy cel shading, but aren't much of an advancement from the original. It would have been nice if Greenblat had created a 3-D version of PaRappa. Likewise, the gameplay is virtually identical to the original. Although there is a two-player mode that adds replay value, players can easily beat the eight levels in single-player mode in fewer than four hours. Perhaps the biggest disappointment is the game's music; although cute, the game's tunes aren't nearly as memorable as those in the original. Still, players new to the series will find the game charming. Fans of the original are bound to be a bit disappointed. --Raymond M. Padilla

Pros:

  • Cheerful graphics style
  • Simple gameplay
  • Humorous songs
Cons:
  • Graphics and gameplay aren't too different from the original PS One version
  • Extremely short
  • Songs aren't as memorable as in the original

3.0 out of 5 stars Rent it, March 17, 2002
This review is from: PaRappa the Rapper 2 (Video Game)
I really wanted to like this game and recommend it, but it is so so short. I finished it in about an hour and 20 minutes (and that includes watching all the cut scenes). It's not that it is to easy, but there is only 8 songs to do. I would've rated it higher if it has been longer.

The music is very derivative of the first PaRappa game. I guess there are only so many ways you can carve up 16 beats but it seems like a lot of the patterns were the same. Remember the chicken's song from the first game? It's back. I guess this could be a positive for a sequel game if used in the right way but I found it sort of annoying.

Every 2 levels there is some sort of bonus game where you break boards or dishes by pressing the appropriate button when the dish/board is displayed. I did not enjoy this at all and would've liked to just skip to the next level. Of course that wouldn't made the game even shorter.

Contrary to many reviews here I found the story line kind of cute, but I'm not really a stickler for story on most games. In fact, I found it very funny. but I'm sure you have to be in the mood.

One improvement that has been made is when you push the buttons, the relative timing of the presses are shown on the screen sort of overlayed on the pattern you're playing. It made it easier to figure out what went wrong sometimes.

The graphics were an improvement over the old game and added to the experience. The load times didn't seem as long as the first PaRappa and weren't very annoying.

In summary if you like this kind of game by all means rent it because it's fun. If you want to buy, look for the old PaRappa or Lammy games, the PS2-ness is kind of wasted on this title.

4.0 out of 5 stars Too short, but fun, June 29, 2004
By
This review is from: PaRappa the Rapper 2 (Video Game)
I just purchased a PS2 yesterday, and this is one of the many games I bought with it. Being a fan of the original as well as Um Jammer Lammy, it was one of the many games I felt like I had missed out on by only owning an XBox and a Gamecube. So, that being said, if you're a fan of the other two games, you'll love it for the music (although the songs aren't quite as memorable as the previous titles.)

One of the nice additions to this sequel is that most of the songs no longer have a "call and answer" feel to them, meaning that while your opponent is rapping, Parappa is usually doubling the vocals in places or doing a little freestyle here and there over it.

Even having to replay a couple of the levels twice, I finished it in a little over an hour. So basically the question is, how much did you replay the original games just to hear the songs again? If, like me, the answer is "a lot", then it's most certainly worth your time.

Others might be turned off by the incredibly short length of the game and its very bizzare plotline, but if you're a musician or a music fan you should have a lot of fun revisiting this game on occasion.

4.0 out of 5 stars Low Down on Parappa the Rappa 2, March 7, 2003

Now if it's a real review you want, then read ON!

Gettin straight to the point(THE VERDICT):

UPPERS:
-funny script and story.
-Very Well animated!
-Quality rapping!
-Nice two-player game.

DOWNERS:(trust me, this game isn't reall down, I'm just picking hairs here!)
-Dull bonus and training bits.
-Still a very short game.
-Jokes soon wear thin
-The food makes you hungry(see what I mean!)

Overall Results:
Graphics = Nice, but you're always staring at symbols:7/10
Sound = Good tunes, enjoyable lyrics and ace rapping!:9/10
Lifespan = Short, easy, but saved by two-player action: 7/10

Overall Score and thoughts:
Better than most rhythm-action games thanks to its jam-along two-player mode. The only downfalls are the shortness and the rather vague jokes. IF YOU LIKE THIS THEN U'LL LOVE SPACE CHANNEL 5(GIVE IT A SHOT!)
SO OVERALL I GIVE IT 8/10!
