Under-rated band makes splash,

This review is from: Pablo Cruise (Audio CD)
This, the self-titled first album by Pablo Cruise, proves the superior musicianship that characterized their music throughout the 70's and beyond. From the smooth groove of the opening track "Island Woman" driven by bassist Bud Cockrell, to the pop-rocker "What Does It Take", to lead guitarist David Jenkins' soulful acoustic ballad "In My Own Quiet Way", to the stunning climactic operetta - "Ocean Breeze", featuring both the classical genre of Cory Lerios' piano licks, as well as more classic white soul from Jenkins.
They rivaled Elton John's "Funeral For A Friend" with the driving instrumental "Zero To Sixty In Five" on their second album "Lifeline", and finally hit their first commercial success on their third album "A Place In The Sun". But it is this first album that defines Pablo Cruise as one of the most talented bands of the '70's. Nobody played better than these guys.

Their first album was a perfect fit into the times of the 70's. Their sound unique, moving and infectious. The musicianship top notch. They played at San Mateo high school, when I was a junior, just before this album was released and I was hooked. The release of "A Place in the Sun" only proved their excellence. I agree! Ocean Breeze is a must hear. I remember singing this to my girlfriend as we listened to the album together. A beautiful piece. Very moving.

This album came out while I was in college. I listened to the tape so much that I actually wore it out. When I noticed that the CD was available I had to order it. I love this gentle smooth rock music.

This is Pablo Cruise's first album, before they sold out and became commerical. The vocals on Ocean Breeze are about the best any vocals can be. Ocean Breeze is a long song and a lot of it is instrumental, the vocals coming in at the end. That song alone is worth the price of this CD, but other songs on it are great as well.
