A spin-off from a cartoon series occasionally shown on the Disney Channel, but more popular overseas, this tale of three fox cubs making a forbidden foray into the city adds the thrill of danger to the excitement of exploring unfamiliar territory. While their parents are away foraging, Pablo persuades his equally hungry sibs, Poppy and Pumpkin, to follow him out of the burrow in search of food. After falling into a river, being chased by dogs, and experiencing several other misadventures, the three are led back home by a helpful sea gull--arriving just before their oblivious parents. Opening and closing with cozy family scenes to keep things from becoming too frightening, Giffard places the stylized, bushy tailed, bright red fox cubs in a moonlit cityscape free of human figures, using white outlines and deep colors to give her watercolors a stained-glass look. Pair this with the adventures of Jane Simmons' intrepid duckling Daisy, and other tales of temporary ventures from the nest. John Peters

About the Author

Hannah Giffard's parents were both artists. Her books for Frances Lincoln include Red Fox and Red Fox on the Move - both shortlisted for the Children's Book of the Year Award - and Is There Room on the Bus, written by Helen Piers. In the 1990s she created an award-winning animation series called Pablo - the Little Red Fox, based on the Red Fox books and co-produced with her husband, Keith Tutt has worked with his wife, Hannah Giffard on the animation series featuring Pablo. The series has been shown on BBC television and throughout the world, winning a BAFTA in 2000 for Best International Children's Programme. A full-length feature film is now being made of Pablo - the Little Red Fox.
