I do a lot of bathroom and kitchen remodels, and many times, that calls for tile work. Several years ago, I needed something better than a saw to cut 1/2" Hardibacker board, because of all the cement dust they kick up. I bought one of these directly from Pacific Tool when the local lumber/hardware supplier only carried the S404 Snapper Shear. Loved it from the first time I used it, and it went through a lot of remodels before the motor burned out a couple of months ago. I called Pacific Tool directly, and they confirmed my suspicions about the motor, and they were able to 2nd day a new one to me.This tool cuts backer board like a hot knife through butter, going through five feet of 1/2" Hardiboard in less than a 30 seconds. It does accurate inside corners, and with a little practice and finesse, you can do trim cuts quickly, and neatly, such as when the cut board is just a bit on the tight side.

I'm a bathroom remodeling contractor and install only Hardibacker. I used to use a rotozip and right angle grinder with a diamond blade to do more intricate cuts in hardibacker. The score and snap method only works when you're cutting off a big enough piece.

I finally decided to lay out the dough and buy this for a large bathroom remodel and I can't believe I waited so long to buy it. This thing cuts hardibacker so easy. What's really nice about it is that if you're trimming off a small section, after you cut the hardi, you still have a usable piece left. You don't destroy hardi by the score and snap method on small pieces. In addition to cutting my installation time in half, it also saves me money by leaving me perfect leftovers. And all this without a load of dust.

One reviewer mentioned that the cord may get caught in the kerf. It happened to me a few times but if you're careful, it's not a problem. The only thing is that if you're doing a long cut, the curled up hardi debris kinda blocks the view of your cutting line. So you have to stop cutting and push the curled up debris out of the way. But that's not the fault of this cutter really.

I'd give this more stars if I could!

If you've ever cut HardiBacker with any other method, you will appreciate the speed and accuracy that this tool provides--not to mention the virtually dust-free operation. This shear allows you to make cuts as fast as a circular saw in 1/4" and 1/2" backer board but without the mess. You can also use it to trim even 1/8" of material off a piece that is too large, making it ideal for custom fitting irregular shapes.

The only criticism I can levy is that I wish the cutting head was 90 degrees to the board--as it is on their cordless model. As it is, the power cord has a tendency to get caught in the kerf of the cut. The flatter you hold the tool to the blades, the cleaner the cut; unfortunately, doing this tends to press the power cord against the board and drag the cord into the kerf. Small nit, but fixing this would make an otherwise excellent tool perfect.

I have been installing ceramic tile for 10 years. The worst part of the job is cutting the backerboard. The special saw blades work great but produce so much dust that you have to use them outside. I live in NW Pennsylvania. Cutting outside isn't an option in the winter. Using a knife to score the board, then snapping it off never seems to work well. I finally broke down and bought this backerboard shear. I'm kicking myself for spending the last 10 years inhaling backerboard dust. (which by the way contains silica and is rather harmful to your lungs.)

This shear cut 1/2" hardibacker like scissors cut paper. It was easy to cut straight lines and subtle curves. Tight curves took some creativity. (like the hole for a toilet) I cut the backerboard for my most current job in the kitchen of the house I was working on. A few minutes with a broom at the end of the day was all the cleanup I had.

I can't speak to its durability because I have only owned it for two months. The shear, however, seems to be well made and is quite hefty. Before I bought it I called the customer service number at PacTool. I spoke with a very nice lady about the warranty. She informed me that once they receive the item they have a two day turn around on all repairs. That in itself was enough to convince me to give it a try.

I'm a tile setter and I should have bought this tool a long time ago. No dust, quiet, and fast. You can trim small edges too. MUCH better than using your circular saw to cut Hardibacker!

I bought this tool after starting a bathroom remodeling project in which I removed old sheetrock and tile and installed concrete backer board. Man oh man I really wish I would have known about this tool before I started cutting my Hardie Backer...I started off using the score and snap method to break my Hardie Backer board, but as one other reviewer said the score and snap method is only for bigger pieces of board; once you start having to measure and cut smaller pieces of concrete board then scoring and snapping just doesn't work unless you possess the strength of three Lou Ferrignos. Further, scoring and snapping leaves sort of a rough, jagged edge that doesn't lend itself well to clean corners. So, after searching for a better way to cut backer board, I bought the SS424. This tool absolutely makes easy work of cutting backer board; I used it to cut half-inch thick board and it worked beautifully. As others have said, it does take practice to learn how to cut along a straight line, but once you get good with it you will never want to use anything else. Some people will say to use a table saw with a special concrete fiber cutting blade, but that way of cutting board creates SO much dust; the SS424 creates almost no dust thus lowering your silica exposure risk. Also, once again as others have said, a little backer board will curl up between the cutting blades and this can get in the way of following your cutting line, but after a few cuts you sort of learn to deal with it. If you have tried scoring and snapping do yourself a favor and buy this tool. I'm pretty sure that if they made backer board back in the 14th century then Dante would have listed scoring and snapping this stuff all day as the tenth circle of Hell. I like this tool so much that I considered buying a second one just so I can sleep next to it at night. Thanks, I hope this review helped someone.
