Perfect -- and not merely for Pachabel's Canon,
This review is from: Pachelbel: Canon / Fasch: Concerto for trumpet (Audio CD)
Many of the other reviewers have focussed on the beauty of Paillard's rendition of the famous Pachabel Canon. It's certainly my favourite version -- nothing else comes close. But the real joy of this CD is that the Canon is not the highlight; instead, it's just one of many highlights. The Pachabel suite is almost as delicious as its more famous sibling work, and the Fasch concerto and symphonies are all superb. You may buy this CD because you want the Canon, but you'll listen to it over and over because each and every piece is a complete delight.

THE Most BEAUTIFUL Version of CANON, EVER!!!,
This review is from: Pachelbel: Canon / Fasch: Concerto for trumpet (Audio CD)
I have a much longer review of this version on 'Canon In D and Other Baroque favorites' Also by Paillard. As this same version is also on that one. I cannot say enough about this version of Canon. I've been more than obsessed by it ever since I heard it in and at the end of 'Ordinary People'. I stood transfixed, crying at the soothing-gentleness and intense power of it. I had my father 'loop' it. (make it play over and over again). I've performed Ballet to it.... I play it for everyone who knows me, and make sure they know to connect me, my soul, my personality, with that version of Canon In D. It is sooo incredibly intensely unforgettable. It marks you for life. You will never forget it once you hear it. It is so perfect, Pachabel must've heard this music in Heaven and transcribed it for our earthly ears. You will never be the same after being exposed to such an incredibly rich, soul-touching piece of music.

Our Favorite recording of Pachelbel's Canon in D,
By
This review is from: Pachelbel: Canon / Fasch: Concerto for trumpet (Audio CD)
This is the best recording of Pachelbel's Canon in D that I have found. when My family fell in love with this peice we purchased many different version of it Until we finally found the one we LOVED. We found it as a recording released in vinyl by the Musical Heritage society. When our vinayl copied developed some warping we could not find a replacement. This is it. You will love it!

Agree with most, this is the best Pachelbel Canon,

I waited many years for this recording to come out on CD, and I found it last year in Japan.I still remember the first time I heard this version in a Toronto record store, I stopped and had to ask the cashier what she was playing, bought the vinyl record and wore it out in no time. The Canon is one of those pieces that is grossly overplayed, but this one is special, heartfelt and somehow makes all other versions dissatisfying. You will not be sorry to get this mid-price CD. Sound quality is medicore, you then shouldn't buy music for sound.

Most Rapturous version ever,
By
This review is from: Pachelbel: Canon / Fasch: Concerto for trumpet (Audio CD)
When this recording first came out ages ago on vinyl, it created a sensation. Phone lines to classical music stations were jammed with callers wanting to know who performed the Canon. Bob Kerr used it as the ending to his Off the Record show every weekday on CBC Stereo in Canada. People wore out their LP's listening to the title track over and over.To this day, it remains the most alluring version ever recorded. The other works on this set are very appealing as well. Worth every dime and more.

Way back in 1974, the RCA LP of Pachelbel's Canon and Fasch trumpet concertos by the Paillard Orchestra was released. It became a hit record, a crossover from Classical, and an overused cliche forever afterward. It was because of this album, that everyone else immediately discovered Pachelbel and released a version of it. The Paillard Orchestra version is still unique because of its slower pacing, and as stated in another's review, more pronounced plucked (pizacata?) strings. It is still the FIRST AND BEST version, everyone else's is too fast, too scrunched, overpowering any continuo. Don't know about the sound quality on this CD, but digital is not always better than analog because of sampling rates and clipping. The pairing with other (now well-known) pieces by Pachelbel, and the wonderful Maurice Andre playing Fasch still make this album the best, unique, a keeper, and archival material for being the first version of the Canon to start a 30 year craze. Thank goodness I now have a CD in case my favorite LP (along with the Paillard Orchestra's Bach Branderberg Concertos) can no longer find a turntable to play it.

Music for the Soul,
By A Customer
This review is from: Pachelbel: Canon / Fasch: Concerto for trumpet (Audio CD)
If you are on a desert island and have only one piece of music, this is THE ONE. This is the ultimate, interpretation of Pachelbel's Canon in D. I played it for a 90 year old woman. About 3/4 of the way through, a bony hand came out between the covers and wiped a tear. Later she said, "This is the piece of music I wish to hear in my last moments."

The ONLY WAY TO RELAX...USE A CANON! NOT 'N 1812',JUST IN D!,
By KC Jefferies (Seattle, WA USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Pachelbel: Canon / Fasch: Concerto for trumpet (Audio CD)
Pachelbel's Canon in D is the ONLY piece you should ever use to relax by. Here it is played very well by the Paillard Chamber Orchestra conducted by Jean-Francois Paillard. Now as an ex-recording engineer and announcer, I would have given the "solo" harpsichord a little closer miking, but after listening to it for several "hundred times", I can forgive them for that little "mistake!" The album isn't engineered as well as it could have been. That's why I rated it 4 stars. The Canon was orginally written for organ and was also performed as a choral piece. You can hear it performed this way in the opening credits of the movie, "ORDINARY PEOPLE". It was introduced to me, by a PAUL MASSON WINERY Commercial for "EMERALD DRY", back in the early '70's! So, if you've wondered where you've heard it before, there you go! This is one album, of a very few, that includes more than just the Canon by Pachelbel. The Canon is followed by two more Pachelbel pieces. The Musicalische Erogotzung: Partit #6 in B Flat Major is really nice. It's my favorite of the two following the Canon. It really makes for a nice contrast after the slower pace of the Canon. This will give you the 'flavor' and composing style of a great master. After composing the Canon and during this time, Pachelbel was teaching J.S. BACH's older brother, music theory and harmony. IN-TURN, the brother taught J.S. BACH. The rest is HISTORY! IF YOU LIKE BACH, you'll like PACHELBEL! The Fasch pieces are also excellent. Mauric Andre' performs them well without over-emphasizing the trumpet. I use to play parts of this album, in the mid-80's, on my old weekend-morning classical radio program in the midwest. I gave a vinyl copy to the station too! This album was originally release on RCA records which owns ERATO. So yes, the cover has changed, but not the music. So grab a glass of your favorite wine, sit by the fire, and enjoy. It's a great album to study by, to eat dinner to, or to be with a very close friend! A nice way to end an evening...

The original Canon in D Major interpretation,
By A Customer
This review is from: Pachelbel: Canon / Fasch: Concerto for trumpet (Audio CD)
This is either the remastered recording of J.Pachelbel -- J.F. Fasch "Music for Chamber Orchestra" or a close remake of the best interpretation (in my opinion) ever. The original came out some 25 years ago.
