The Canon in D is a bit fast for my taste, but Pinnock and his English Concert pull it off marvelously. Vivaldi's composition is delightful. The oboe in the Albinoni piece stands out in my memory as a highlight to this album. The Haydn keyboard concerto that concludes the disc is beautiful. I prefer Pinnock's rendition of this composition on the harpsichord to other performances that I have heard on a modern grand piano.

My guess is that you have seen literally thousands of records with Pachelbel's Cannon in D. This a performance you will enjoy.

I have probably purchased more than MMM (latin for 3,000) cds in my lifetime and have downloaded more than 10k songs (didn't know the latin for that).. THIS CD IS WORTH THE MONEY!
I bought this cd on the fly about 8 years ago for about $3.00 (no kidding, it was marked to sell) probably from a Tower Records store in Philadelphia. LET ME TELL YOU -- I FELL IN LOVE WITH TREVOR PINNOCK AND THE ENGLISH CHAMBER ORCHESTRA! Why did I buy this cd? I was dallying with the idea that I wanted to take up violin, so I thought, 'hey, this has violin solos'. But what I got was more than just good music - but an appreciation for the talents of these musicians (and Trevor Pinnock) and the construction of this album. If you're not big on classical music (like me), you'll love this album. What's endearing is the sweet performances, clarity and quality of sound (just like you're there in the room), and the synergy in that room when they recorded. I didn't care for every track, but trust me -- you'll really fall for this troupe and Trevor Pinnock. In fact, I'm planning on collecting their albums and would pay money to see a live performance. I'm having to re-buy this cd because mine's scratched to heck and I can't find this in the stores. |
