I did not have to drill new holes or use the inserts that came with it.

Up to you, but doesn't bother me and looks a lot better than the slip on variety of recoil absorber.

I pick this product because it is the only one available on the market.

The quality seems good and I'm sure it will absorb a fair amount of recoil however the fit is terrible. It hangs over the edge of the stock in some areas and I was unable to get a proper fit. I ended up lightly sanding my stock to get a flush fit and I also hand to sand the pad edge down in other areas. Now I have to touch up the stock with walnut stain to make it look good. I am surprised that Pachmayr was unable to figure out how to achieve a better fit on one of the most popular rifle stocks made.

It was easy to mount and fit almost perfectly. My BDL stock was already drilled so I just needed to screw it on.

I have the Remington 700 BDL in .30-06, it is a 1987 manufacture and has the curved, wood "Monte Carlo" butt stock (unlike the newer 700 BDL, which are flat/straight). Read some other reviews that said this 700 ADL pad will fit on the 700 BDL, so took the plunge.
Comes with the pad, a spacer, two screws, and two plastic anchors. Evidently they want you to drill fat holes in the stock to put the anchors in, not sure the reasoning because in construction if you can screw into solid wood you don't use an anchor. Thankfully another reviewer said check every other option FIRST before drilling the large bore holes for the anchors. In my case, the holes in the pad and adapter lined up rather well with the pre-drilled holes in the stock. I removed the original black plastic stock cover as well as the white plastic spacer. You should also take the time to scrape away any residual glue/adhesive from the wood.
The fit is not perfect, but neither a 700 ADL nor 700 BDL is a show piece - it is designed to hunt/shoot. The pad lines up fairly well, on my gun it is slightly smaller than the stock itself, which may lead to chipping of the wood eventually. From a few feet away it looks GREAT, though you do lose the look of the white spacer that you also have on the fore-end cap and pistol grip base. Up to you, but doesn't bother me and looks a lot better than the slip on variety of recoil absorber.
Pick a high quality cross-tip screwdriver to put this in. I do not recommend you drill out the holes that may already be in your gun, so you will feel some resistance as you're driving these in.
Fired the gun immediately after and the felt recoil is MUCH less than the original plastic piece. If you have the 700 BDL with the monte carlo wood stock and want recoil reduction, AND you don't really care if it still looks pretty, then my friend, this Pachmayr pad is for YOU.

I pick this product because it is the only one available on the market. It fits my 1980 Rem 700 rifle stock not perfectly but is good enough. It works quite well. I will buy it again or recommend it to my friends.

I bought this for my Rem 742 as it was mentioned in some other forums that this would fit it. The holes are spaced exactly right, however when mounted, it was about an 1/8" low. Taking the provided drill bit and my drill, I ground out the holes 1/8" and then mounted it with the stock screws. Fit is now just about perfect (well with in the .05" tolerance called out in there description). I haven't had a chance to see if the is any recoil reduction, but it has to be better than the hard plastic plate that was on there.

During my recovery from rotator cuff surgery, I extensively researched the many options for replacement recoil pads for my Rem 7 mag. For my body type and shooting preferences, it came down to two choices. I purchased both and went to the range for my own comparison. I started by shooting a three shot group with my original recoil pad. I then installed the Decelerator on my late 70's 700 and shot a second three shot group. Initially, I wasn't aware of a huge difference so I went back to the original pad. After the first shot, I realized that there was a big difference. Still wanting to compare the other brand, I installed the second recoil pad and intended to shoot a three shot group. After my second shot, I put the Decelerator back on because there was no doubt that the Pachmayr was the best option for me. I'd give it an honest 25-30% reduction in felt recoil. FYI - It was not a perfect fit (a little large)but was easily shaped to a seamless fit to the stock. Nice product!
