I tried it and it works...,
By ecottone@yahoo.com (Mendocino, California) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Pacific Crest Trail Hiker's Handbook: Innovative Techniques and Trail Tested Instruction for the Long Distance Hiker (Paperback)
Last summer I walked 515 miles using the techniques in Jardines book. I walked through the entire state of Washington. I encountered rain, snow, mosquitos galore and a host of other problems that were all easily handled with the techniques outlined in Ray's book. I even made my own backpack on an old Singer sewing machine with the plans in the book. I wore running shoes the whole way. I finished the hike in 23 days, counting the five rest days I took. This book is excellant, not to mention well written.

Great book for ideas about lightening your pack!,

This review is from: Pacific Crest Trail Hiker's Handbook: Innovative Techniques and Trail Tested Instruction for the Long Distance Hiker (Paperback)
This book presents interesting ideas for reducing the weight of one's backpack, giving directions for making and modifying equipment and using that equipment effectively in the outdoors. Though the information is often geared toward hiking the PCT, the information certainly applies to any backpacking experiences.

The bible of ultralight backpacking.,
By gomberg@wcf.com (San Francisco) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Pacific Crest Trail Hiker's Handbook: Innovative Techniques and Trail Tested Instruction for the Long Distance Hiker (Paperback)
This watershed volume encourages backpackers to shed scores of ugly pounds from their backs, travelling faster and lighter. The author contends that this leads to smoother, easier travel, covering more miles per day with less fatigue. There is some controversy about recommendations like wearing running shoes to pack in, but Jardine presents the pros and cons and explains the importance of training to be able to use these new techniques. If you aspire to ultralight packing, fast packing or long-distance packing this is an important book to read. And it's pleasurable reading too!
