Pacific Digital's DrumXtreme DX-MIDI-PRO digital drum kit is the perfect kit for space- or noise-constrained musicians and would-be musicians. The MIDI-capable DX-MIDI-PRO is a compact electronic drum set in its own rack-type setup, which makes it look and feel more like a traditional drum set. It comes complete with six separate 7.5-inch drum pads, 2 foot pedals, a rack/stand, drumsticks, MIDI (Musical Instrument Digital Interface) and USB cables, and separate MIDI and USB consoles: MIDI for use with other MIDI-capable devices, and USB for integration with a PC.

The DX-MIDI-PRO features adjustable percussion sensitivity and professional-quality sound that can be played full-blast or muted, to spare the ears of family and neighbors. Plug-and-play DrumXtreme is easy to assemble and sets up or folds down in minutes. Set up, it's 36-inches high, 36-inches deep and 18-inches wide. The kit supports up to 7 drum pads (hi-hat, snare, tom1, tom2, tom3, ride, crash) and 2 pedals (bass drum and hi-hat control).

Audio inputs and outputs let you feed external sources into your playing, and let you amplify or record your playing to other devices. The song recording feature lets you record your drum music to the sequencer in real-time (one track at a time). All MIDI channels are recorded simultaneously.

The system includes a CD software tutorial with training videos, play-along 4-level drum game, exercises, interface to select from 20 different drum sound banks, with over 380 usable voices, plus a tone effect feature that helps beginners develop snare, tom, hi-hat, crash, and ride skills. It also includes full documentation and a CD with pre-recorded play-a-long scores (50 preset songs, 4 user songs, plus 1 demo song).

Before buying this kit I search the various review sites, and talked to various musicians about what would be the best kit for me. I was originally looking at the USB only version of this kit, but decided on this one. There is a lot of debate out there about the quality of sound that comes out of this kit, especially the USB version.

This version if the kit includes the USB module, which I tried first. I learned quickly that you pretty much want to just toss it. The problem with the USB module is highly depended on the quality of the sound card in your computer, and not on the set its self. For example, on my laptop, it produces really poor sound that was at least half second behind what I was playing. This was very annoying, and made the included drum game impossible. In addition most computer speakers are very low quality and do not have the dynamic range that you need for the set to sound right. Unless you have a high computer with high end sound card, and high end speakers, I would say the USB module is worthless.

The other module that comes with the unit has MIDI out, and can produce its own sound. When hooked up to decent set of speakers, I have mine run though an old stereo, the kit sounds great. The module is very easy to use, and you have a lot of options to change the sounds, volumes, and even position of the sound. The headphone jack on the module is great for practicing with out disturbing a sleeping child, or others. The only complaint I have with it is the choke on the crash only works with the USB module.

The kit actually can take one additional pad beyond what the kit comes with. The plug is labeled ride, but since you can assign any sound to any plug, you could make it another tom tom or what ever you would like.

I am very happy with this kit, and I think its a great set for those that want to get started, and not drop a ton of money on a high end set.

Excellent for learning the basics at a very reasonable price!

Plug in an AMP and it works for any garage band.

Plug and a headset and everyone in the house will love you!

My experience is with the Drum Extreme DX-150, not the DX-MIDI-PRO drum kit.
However, the USB module that came with our DX-150 quit only a couple of months after purchase. The seller honored only a 30 day warranty and required us to contact Pacific Digital. Ha. Check out their web site..."support no longer available".
You've been warned.
