The Alaska Yukon Pacific Exposition, held during the summer of 1909, was the first world's fair held in Seattle. Capitalizing on the popularity of the booming gold rush, the exposition was designed to showcase the riches of the Pacific Northwest and highlight trade with the Pacific Rim nations and beyond. Millions of visitors came to Seattle to experience the one-of-a-kind attractions, exhibits, and events held during the AY PE, which became the footprint for the modern University of Washington campus. Many of these visitors stayed to populate the growing metropolis. From the ornate European-style architecture to the fountains and gardens, the amusements of the Pay Streak, and the exotic Oriental exhibits, the AYPE entertained and educated while bringing needed business to Washington State.

Authors Shauna and Brennan O'Reilly are Seattle-area natives and graduates of the University of Washington. Shauna has worked for over three years at UW Special Collections Library, where she became passionate about the AYPE. Brennan is a collector of local history artifacts and is a published author. They have gathered from UW Special Collections Library and Museum of History and Industry hundreds of stunning images that capture the spirit of the AYPE.

It's nice to see what UW (University of Washington, Seattle) looked like (I'm a current UW student). It was more beautiful than it is now unfortunately. Essentially a really nice collection of historic stock photos. Should be on the shelf of all UW departments/offices.

This seems like an obscure topic. How many people in the Seattle area even knew about this event until recently? I sure didn't. This book is a great look at Seattle 100 years ago during an important time in the city's developement. The authors have found some really fun pictures and the writing is clear, concise and is very well researched. I looked at some of the other books online, but this one seemed best and I was not disappointed that I had paid for it.
