The Pacific Laser Systems PLS2E KIT is an improvement on the popular PLS2 Palm laser. The PLS2E is now detectable, and it can be used outdoors even when the laser is not visible in the bright sunlight. Because this is a self-leveling line generating laser, it will self-level when placed within 6 percent of level. If the unit is not able to self-level, the line will not turn on -- so a visible line is a plumb or level line, no mistakes.

The PLS2E has four functions controlled by one button. Push the button once and you get a visible horizontal level line going out from the tool at a 90-degree fan angle, if placed in a corner the line will cover four-fifths of a room. Push the button a second time and the line changes from level to plumb, giving you a vertical line across the floor, up the wall and across the ceiling. Push the button a third time and both lines are shown. Push it a fourth time and the self-leveling feature is removed, and the button will change from green to red to alert the user that the self leveling is off. Now you can aim the crossed lines at your target.

This model also has a second button that will slightly dim the visible line but then make it detectable with the detector included. Accuracy is within 1/8 inch at 30 feet and within 3/8 inch at 100 feet. The laser has a 1/4-20 threaded hole for use with a camera tripod. The range of the detector is 100+ feet. This kit includes a magnetic bracket, a padded belt pouch and a molded plastic case to hold the detector, laser, wall bracket and pouch when not in use. The laser will run for 25-40 hours on three AA batteries (not included).

I'm a finish carpenter who is in the process of building my own house. I spent a great deal of time researching the laser market before settling for this product. I wanted the exterior detector feature that works both in level and plumb mode. I've been completely satisfied with the PLS2E. Everything that I've set with the laser has been dead level when compared with my six foot level. The laser fans out nicely so that you can set it at one corner of the building and level at least three corners if not all four at the same time. It's very sensitive in the detector mode. Very good performance for this relatively inexpensive product.

I recently finished a basement and picked this up to help with the suspended ceiling. It got plenty of use before I even got to the ceiling. I used it to layout and plumb the walls, layout some boxed posts, check the floor for level, plumb the rough openings, and level the ceiling. The great thing was I just turned it on and there it was, a level line that was easily movable when I needed it. It was also much easier not to have to hold a level with one hand and try to drive nails or screws with the other. Although initially it may seem the price is high, I would have to say that my PLS2 almost paid for itself on one job because of time saved. A couple of notes: one set of batteries lasted the whole basement job, and I probably had it on twice as much as i needed to, also, I tested it outside and found that with the detector I could use it up to about 300 feet.

I use it for site inspections and it is portable and easy to set up and use.
Exterior target is useful for exterior use and for interior on bright sunny days.
