More About the Author
Douglas (Doug) Breithaupt was born in Port Angeles, WA in 1957. He is a third generation resident of the Olympic Peninsula where his grandparents settled in 1922. Doug lived in Jefferson County with his family until 1968 and attended Grant Street School in Port Townsend, WA. He returned to Jefferson County in 1986, when he and his wife purchased the former Discovery Bay (Uncas) School and made it into the Breithaupt home. Doug has four children - Bentley (14), Amelia (10), Sophia (8) and Spencer (7).
Doug graduated from North Kitsap High School in 1976, He received his associate of arts degree from Bellevue Community College in 1978 and then transfered to Seattle University where in 1981 he received his bachelor of arts degree in history. While in college, Doug illustrated the book, 'Speak out with Clout', a guide to public speaking and the news media.
After college, Doug worked for the Northwest Educational Loan Association (NELA), Seattle University, Everett Community College, Western Washington University and Antioch University (Seattle).
Since 1987 Doug has served as President of the nonprofit College Planning Network, a local organization that for 22 years has provided Washington State families with the tools to succeed in the college admission, financial aid and scholarship process. His professional skills and credentials include work in business administration, budget and finance, fund-raising, public speaking and community relations. Doug has conducted many workshops for Washington State families, helping them pursue their college goals.
In 1989, Doug authored the 'Pacific Northwest Scholarship Guide', a directory of college scholarships for Pacific Northwest students. A total of eight editions were published with the last offered in 2002. Doug also co-authored with Lauren Christman 'Back to School', a guide for adults returning to college. Doug's most recent book, published in 2009, is 'The Money Maze' a guide to the college financial aid and scholarship process.
Current board and volunteer activities include: Northwest Dollars for Scholars - Board of Directors (11 years), Washington Scholarship Coalition Advisory Board (4 years) and volunteering as a Jefferson County Recreation League basketball coach (4 years),
Throughout his professional career, Doug has served on a variety of local and state boards and commissions. The diverse nature of this service ranges from President of the Bellevue Community College Alumni Board of Governors to membership on the local nonprofit Twisters Gymnastics Team Board.
Doug has been a long-time enthusiast in the collector car hobby as well as a participant in and organizer of vintage car rallies. Other hobbies include cycling, sailing, history, writing and travel.
