5.0 out of 5 stars Pacific Rim - Original Soundtrack June 25, 2013
Format:MP3 Music|Verified Purchase
There's a nice mix of intensity and melody in the "Pacific Rim" score. The guitar is used quite frequently, something I love in movie scores because it is somewhat uncommon. The first few tracks on the album capture your interest immediately and place you in that world, and then fortunately the rest of the album continues to provide a quality music experience.

I have become a fan of composer Ramin Djawadi over the last few years, I particularly enjoy his work on "Game of Thrones". He has become very good at infusing epic action movies with emotion and heart. I think he was the right person to score "Pacific Rim". In some ways, this score reminds me of Djawadi's work on the first "Iron Man" film - and that's a good thing.

I'm very excited to see the movie, especially after hearing this score (which I think will work well based on the imagery I've seen from the movie). This soundtrack is worth a purchase, and its definitely something that you could listen to multiple times.

5.0 out of 5 stars Really Good July 1, 2013
By Mikey

I first heard Ramin's work on Iron Man and have payed attention to him ever since. But honestly, I think Pacific Rim is my favorite soundtrack from him yet. It's a great balance of action and heart. I decided to go see the movie once I listened to this score. Definitely recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars Genuine Genre Soundtrack July 3, 2013
By Rob
Format:MP3 Music|Verified Purchase
Without even seeing the film, Pacific Rim is a labor of love to a genre of cinema that has never been fully realized in the Western World. Mecha/Kaiju Films have only until now been animated, or poorly adapted in live action films, and what little exposure to anything of this caliber in the United States has been underwhelming, and poorly executed because of a general lack of substance.

The soundtrack to the film is a bombastic blast to the genre in all of the right ways. Each track carries with it a sense of the film's style and respect for its source. For example, track 1 "Pacific Rim" carries the weight of a theme song if the film as a series, and track 2 "Gipsy Danger" resonates with the sound of the hero-mecha's main anthem. When you hear those first cords of the track, you can't help but feel the Mecha's presence.

4.0 out of 5 stars This Might Be Djawadi's Best July 25, 2013
Format:MP3 Music
If you've already read my site's review of Guillermo del Toro's new sci-fi epic Pacific Rim, you'll know by now that I absolutely loved it from start to (almost) finish. A few clichéd relationships and a good dose of summer camp brought the film down at points but these ended up being forgivable shortcomings when put into perspective of the entire package: giant robots vs. giant monsters. I mean, what more could one expect from a movie with the tagline "go big or go extinct"? Del Toro dared to go big and, thankfully, original and it paid off in spades, making Pacific Rim the surprise hit of the summer for me.

Also a surprise was Ramin Djawadi's score for the film. In interview, del Toro explained how he first became aware of Ramin Djawadi through his addiction to popular Fox series Prison Break, which the composer scored from 2005-2009. What struck him was how Djawadi's music was so integral to his enjoyment of the show's remarkable energy. "His scores have a grandeur and also have an incredible sort of human soul" del Toro stated while working with Djawadi on Pacific Rim. Not everyone in the film music community would expressly agree with del Toro. Since his score for Iron Man put him on the radar, Djawadi has received mixed criticism and praise for his aggressively synthesized/electronic sensibilities and reliance on the Remote Control Productions toolbox for most projects. Personally, I have always enjoyed Ramin Djawadi's work with a kind of guilty pleasure mindset; his scores often work functionally in the film and usually produce two to three tracks worth listening to on their own, even when he avoids exploring the most thematically developed of routes.

3.0 out of 5 stars Pacific Rim - A fun score lacking on thematic unity June 30, 2013
Format:Audio CD
*** 1/2

The lovechild of Guillermo del Toro, Pacific Rim is one of the most interesting properties to be released during the Summer months in several years. A homage to both kaiju cinema and the mecha anime genre, Pacific Rim is del Toro's first production since 2008′s Hellboy II: The Golden Army. The reason for the lapse in the popular director's career were the production hells of The Hobbit and The Mountains of Madness. It was just three days after Mountains fell apart due to preproduction negotiations that del Toro signed up for Pacific Rim, with complete creative control. He wrote the script with Travis Beacham, who although has not gathered much attention has put significant effort into building the world of the film before he even began work on the screenplay. This can be seen in many promotional posters and the graphic novel "Tales from Year Zero", which acts as a prequel to the film and narrates the creation of the Jaegars.

For this epic conflict between giant monsters and collosal robots, del Toro turned to Ramin Djawadi. Djawadi is most known for Game of Thrones, whose music started off poorly but has gained a stronger presence in the years. He also composed the music for Iron Man and Clash of the Titans, both of which were poor contributions to their films. With those two soundtracks he sacrificed complex orchestrations for banally simple melodies; style over substance at its most blatant. With Pacific Rim Djawadi manages to keep a fine balance between the two philosophies.

For Pacific Rim del Toro wanted a union of orchestra and rock elements, a musical style most blatantly exploited in the Iron Man trilogy. We see this with the opening cue "Pacific Rim", and we immediately receive the benefit of Djawadi's collaboration with guitarist Tom Morello.
