Be careful , you'll want packgoats...,
By Marc and Gloria Flora (Helena, MT United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: The Pack Goat (Paperback)
This is a great read whether you own goats or are just curious! Mionczynski's years of astute observation, training and use of pack goats can catapult you years ahead in raising and training your own herd... or at least make you roll out of your chair laughing at the caprious caprines you'll meet throughout the book. After reading this book several years ago, my husband and I jumped right into packgoating, despite minimal prior livestock experience. With Mionczynski's book as our primary resource, our herd has grown to 12 -- all well-mannered, happy and healthy. To those of you past your backpacking prime, here's a great way to keep getting into the remote country you love without breaking your back or knees or shoulders or... And you'll have some wonderful four-legged friends in the backyard between hikes.

The Pack Goat,
By A Customer
This review is from: The Pack Goat (Paperback)
"The Pack Goat" contains a wealth of arcane goat behaviour knowledge, and an interesting introduction to the art of goatpacking, by the father of goatpacking. It is not a how-to book, but does give you plenty of ideas on how to get started with your packgoat.

Mionczynski knows his stuff,
This review is from: The Pack Goat (Paperback)
This is a great read whether you own goats or are just curious about goat/horse/llama packing. Trust me, once you have carried 85lbs of gear for 12 miles over the Continental Divide, you will think of it... Goat Packing offers advantages that the other means of animal packing do not: Goats can go anywhere, they are friendlier, you do not need to carry separate food for them for the trail and they do no environmental damage. Goat packing is a great way to keep getting into the remote country you love without breaking your back or knees and will save you much energy to off track hikes, climbing and peak bagging. This book give you the basics on choosing and using goats for packing gear and points you to other more detailed vet, breeding, and training resources. Mionczynski's years of experience of actually working with goats really shows and can give one a head start if you are planning a trip with an outfitter using goats or if you are thinking of doing it yourself.

I found the book very informative and fun reading. Plain straight forward and helpful information. I have purchased packing equipment for my goats and look forward to hiking with them. The packing equipment for goats cost much less than for my llama and horses. Great deal. Keep on packing!

Pack Goat,

This is the classic work on goatpacking by the guy who reinvented/rediscovered it. It is a wonderfully readable book that tells you most of what is needed to get started packing with a goat. In prehistoric times Native Americans packed with dogs and probably mountain goats. I used to teach dog packing seminars at REI. Packing with goats makes more sense. Goats can carry more. They have fewer feet problems. They can survive on browse in wilderness. If you want to learn how this is the best book you can read from the guy who was expert at it.

Would love to spend a couple of weeks in the mountains learning from this man. He really knows his stuff. Read this book in just a few hours. Couldn't put it down. Lots of "common sense" advise on raising, training, and packing with goats!

Inspirational,
This review is from: The Pack Goat (Paperback)
I found this book laying around the office one day and read it fairly quickly. I had never heard of goat packing or ever thought of wanting a goat. This book definitely made me fascinated in the whole idea. It's been about five or six years since I read the book, but I remember how the author described goats as cuddly animals that ate pretty much anything and could hike anywhere, which makes sense, and was able to carry your items. You can even make goat yogurt when you're going on long trips. I plan on backpacking for a while and I am definitely planning on taking a goat with me.

The author, I believe, is the Originator of packing with goats. The book is well organized, interesting and covers all you'd need to know. If you aren't sure which kind of pack animal, if any, you want, this is a strong argument in favor of goats. For me it was especially useful to know which breeds of goats are best and why. I probably would have started out with a less than desirable breed, as I thought all goats were created equal. Lots of photos are included. Mr. Mioncynski loves his goats and vice versa. He's put in the miles, and knows his stuff.
