5.0 out of 5 stars One of Petty's top concert performances.

3.0 out of 5 stars I WANT TO LOVE IT........
a long time TPHB fan, I've never been disappointed...until now....it makes me a little sad. Unlike just about everyone (I guess) I found the video of "Pack Up The Plantation" to be dreadfully lacking in the level of energy and consistency I've come to expect from TP & the HBs (mostly TP). Recorded or live, these guys have always blown me away. Live, they're truly...

If you like Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers in concert go out and purchase this video. You will not be sorry you did!

4.0 out of 5 stars Nice to be reminded, July 17, 2002
This review is from: Pack Up the Plantation [VHS] (VHS Tape)
As a life-long TP fan, with reservations regarding some of the slightly obvious material, I bought this video when it came out. Then lost it so some git who borrowed it and didn't return it. Hard to get another copy in the UK, but it seems it is still around in the States. It's kind of curious to watch a concert which occured before half the material played live these days was written - pre Wilburys, pre Full Moon Fever, pre Wildflowers. Consequently it's a concert that Stan Lynch would presumably have approved of - Tp & The H at their goodtime jangling finest. It's as good as I remembered it, and my memory of it is the reason I've spent the last 10 years looking out for a new copy. Either it's very good or I'm an anorak. Take your pick....

5.0 out of 5 stars This video totally rocks, September 12, 1999

Petty is awesome in this video. A real performance. Of course, you don't feel like you're at a concert--it's a video, dude! But the music really jams, and Petty is into it in a big way. He puts on an unforgettable performance. This is one of the very few videos I bring to parties. Makes for a good ambiance, especially if you are cruising.

Pack up the Plantation documents Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers "Southern Accents" tour. This video was recorded at the same shows as the album, the set list between the video and album do varey a bit though. Having the album Pack up the Plantation, I really enjoy it, so I figured I would buy the video. Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers put on a great show! I've never seen them live, but know when I get the chance to go to one of their concerts I will. This a band that always plays great and sounds in top form. Even though this video is a pricey buy, I recommend it to all Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers fans, and to all rock and roll fans in general.

This is tom petty at his best. I want to get a copy on DVD format. The horn,s and back up singers are a reel treat that you may never see again as well as tom "BREAKING DOWN". Love it,cant wait for the DVD version. TWO THUMBS UP.

4.0 out of 5 stars The Greatest Band Ever...... Live Onstage!!, March 12, 2001

Well, ok... so the greatest band ever was The Traveling Wilburys... but anyway... Now, first off..... those Stevie Nicks fans who bought the Pack Up the Plantation CD need not buy this video. She's not on it... But you know something? The video doesn't suffer a bit in her absence. Best tracks: "Breakdown" and "Spike." With impromptu lines like "...you can take all my money.. and Benmont's money too" and "I can handle this like an adult" Breakdown is an almost comedic performance. No questions remain as to the meaning of Spike... and for this one Tom even puts on a collar.... "I might need me a dog collar too... it might make me say.... say ooowwww... woof!" All in all it's a high energy and very entertaining performance (though the horn section with their oh-so-cheezy glittery suits is a bit nauseating).... and for a fan like me.. who has adored this band since the tender age of eight, yet has never been to a Petty show... makes the viewer envious of all those who were actually present for these magnificent performances.

4.0 out of 5 stars Dark but good, April 14, 2010
This review is from: Pack Up the Plantation [VHS] (VHS Tape)
Good show from Tom and the boys (and girls). The video itself is dark but it is 25 years old. It's still very entertaining. Also very nice to watch a concert video where they film the band much more than the crowd. I don't buy concert videos to watch the crowds. Besides the darkness I only have two other complaints, having a pre-teen and a teen I could do without the off-color word used a few times (f---). Number 2 why do they have to roll the ending credits over the last song? Couldn't they have waited until the concert was over?

5.0 out of 5 stars Why isn't this on DVD yet?!, December 31, 2007
This review is from: Pack Up the Plantation [VHS] (VHS Tape)
This concert is absolutely incredible. So much so, that I've been through two copies of the VHS tape.

C'mon already, where's a DVD?! ...And please, whatever you do, don't base it off of the CD version.

a long time TPHB fan, I've never been disappointed...until now....it makes me a little sad. Unlike just about everyone (I guess) I found the video of "Pack Up The Plantation" to be dreadfully lacking in the level of energy and consistency I've come to expect from TP & the HBs (mostly TP). Recorded or live, these guys have always blown me away. Live, they're truly unbelievable and the "Live" CD of this tour was clearly NOT drawn entirely from this film. In fact I was only positive that one of the songs on the film was actually on the album. Although all the songs were from the tour, most of the songs came from other performances (clearly) and the differences are startling (depending on the night). Frankly, Tom seemed a little "less focused" than usual on the video. I'm not sorry I have it (although the price was outrageous) but, thank God I have the compilation CD so I truly have the best of the best of that tour and, of course, memories of electrifying concerts.

4.0 out of 5 stars Excellent concert video, April 3, 1999
By A Customer

This review is from: Pack Up the Plantation [VHS] (VHS Tape)
This is a live performance of TP & the Heartbreakers, from their "Southern Accents" tour, captured on videotape. There are (thankfully) NO gimmicky "special effects" (such as slow motion or graphics overlays) - this is a very "pure" concert tape. Other than about 1 minute during "Don't Come Around Here" - where they show some footage from the "Alice in Wonderland" video - it's all concert performance on the screen.

The setlist (somewhat different here than on CD - 8 songs here are not on the CD): American Girl, You Got Lucky, It Ain't Nothing to me, Don't Do Me Like That, The Waiting, I Need to Know , Don't Come Around Here No More, Spike, Southern Accents, Rebels, Breakdown, Refugee, Little Bit O' Soul, So You Want to Be a Rock & Roll Star, Make it Better, Route 66 (credits play over the last song).

TP is in great voice as always, he and the band sound excellent. Lead guitarist Mike Campbell in particular does a fabulous job (as usual). There is a 3 person horn section added to the usual 5 member lineup (mainly for songs from the "Southern Accents" album) and they do a good job, they contribute but they don't get in the way. My only real complaint is that the video shows two female backup singers WAY too much! They add little to the performance but seem to be constantly on screen. I would have preferred to see more of the real band members, keyboardist Benmont Tench in particular (his musical contribution deserves more "on screen" time than he gets here). Other than these points, it's a great show and videotape. If you are a TP&HB fan, you will not likely be disappointed.
