4.0 out of 5 stars Love Pacsafe but.....
My PacSafe Roam 100 has gone all over the world. Very roomy but I needed a little larger backpack plus a "lockup safe" for a trip I'm taking next year. I wanted to do away with a fanny pack due to a new Olympus SLR. This Pacsafe seemed pricey but fit my criteria. Wish is came in something besides BLACK and I have two grips for a quality company (reason for 4 stars) Why is...

I carried this backpack in places like Iraq, Miami, San Juan Puerto Rico. Backpack is large enough to carry items needed for carryon, but quickly gets heavy. As the previous reviewer pointed out,the straps are NOT slashproof. And trust me, you will loose items that migrate to the bottom of the pack. The outside pocket does not have any real zipper compartments to prevent loose items from constantly moving around. The main compartemtn zipper busted and can't be replaced easily.

I ended up moving to the smaller, better organized Treksafe 100. Yes it is smaller, but this means no problems

walking across college campuses, airports and putting in a crowded carryon luggage bin. I saved the slashproof compartment to act as a laptop sleeve.

2.0 out of 5 stars Do you want safe valuables or room for them?, March 9, 2010

We had heard that in some of the areas we were to travel, people would steal your items by slashing the bottom of the pack and out they fall. This pack seemed like the solution. It certainly guards against this with the "heavy" wire mesh inner bag. However, this inner bag takes up alot of room and cuts down on the volume of the pack. The mesh bag is removable and comes with a cable to cinch the bag shut and a "cheap" lock to deter a cleaning attendant from trying to break in. However, the drawback is that if you take this inner bag out of the pack, the pack has no more protection than any other. As far as I know the sholder straps are not slashproof, and even though it look as though the outer bag has mesh woven in it, the bottom of the pack does not. It would have been better if the pack itself had a light mesh woven into the entire outer frame and forget the inner bag "safe". We kept everything of value in the hotel safe anyhow. Also, not to sure about the quality. The first real test was on a trip to NYC and by the second day, the handle on top of the pack came off on one side making it useless to lift the pack with. Bottom line is if you want to feel secure, expect to carry a heavy pack, with a minimal amount of storage space.

I wanted to do away with a fanny pack due to a new Olympus SLR. This Pacsafe seemed pricey but fit my criteria. Wish is came in something besides BLACK and I have two grips for a quality company (reason for 4 stars) Why is there a PLASTIC key ring in the their packs? CHEAP CHEAP and subject to breakage. Also, I can't believe they cannot work it in their profit margin to have combination locks rather that key locks. I would never use a key lock on a trip. Only my gates at home have key locks!

Color, keys and plastic key rings....sum up the lack of 5 stars. Otherwise the removeable thief safe will come in handy as I travel across Asia from coast to coast. You don't have to pack your computer and things you don't need for day trips. A bonus.

4.0 out of 5 stars functional but heavy, November 5, 2011

This backpack is a definite upgrade from a security standpoint compared to your average daypack. I carried it around for a full week in Spain recently, and got to know the pros and cons. The straps ARE slashproof (contrary to another review), and the inner pack compartment is totally slashproof as well. The fact that this compartment is removable, and then can be locked and secured to a large piece of furniture, is a great feature. You can leave larger valuables locked in your hotel room when you don't need them out and about all day. After all, who wants to bring their laptop to the art museum, or how do you fit in in your hotel safe? It has plenty of room for a daypack, even with the inner compartment in place (and they offer a larger model for those looking for more capacity than a daypack can hold). It is fairly comfortable to wear, and it stood up to the rigors of daily use, as well as use as a carry-on piece for international flights, without difficulty.

On the con side, the biggest drawback to regular use is the increased weight, most of which comes from the inner compartment, which is heavily armored with its security features. Moreover, there are some simple design enhancements that should be undertaken. The front of the outer pack is slashproof, but as other reviewers have noted, the bottom is not. This should certainly be fixed. It also would help if there were more organizational pockets inside, even if they are obscured when the inner compartment is in place. And it would be nice to offer the pack in some of the other brighter colors available on other Pacsafe products, for better visibility. But overall a solid daypack for the security-minded.
