The Contractor Series

Editorial Reviews

From the Author

When I started working on the Contractor Series, I wanted to write books that explored what it would be like if magic came out into the open. How would people react? Also, how would magic users react? I thought it would be fun to explore a magical society living within our own normal society. For a long time,  I have enjoyed TV series like Grimm, and wanted to create something like that in novels. With my story being about all of society knowing about the things that go bump in the night, but with wizards and witches instead. The Contractor books have been a pleasure to write, and I hope you find them to be a pleasure to read as well.

5.0 out of 5 stars Pactum January 31, 2013
As society is dealing with the fallout of magic coming out of the broom closet and the range of species Humans thought were just tall tales a very strange homicide comes across the desk of Detectives Kaur and Hughes. Based on the findings on the body, the police departments signs a contract (Pactum) with some Vis (magic) users to keep the detectives safe and perhaps assist them with the case. As the case deepens and more pieces fall into place, Alison and Sean may be caught in an all out war.

I was drawn into the author's world with ease and as I followed Alison deeper down the rabbit hole, I enjoyed this story immensely. The varied species (Human, Mage, Succubi, Goblin, etc.) and the different twist on magic (called Vis) helped to paint a vivid picture of a world perhaps in the future. The plot flowed along, picking up steam along the way and you get caught up with all the action. I thought the character dynamics were great. I feel `Pactum' is a great story blending both magic and police procedural. As the story goes on, the characters grow, develop, and reveal a lot of their pasts which enhances the plotline. I am very interested to see where this series goes next!

5.0 out of 5 stars PACTUM REALLY BLEW ME AWAY! February 8, 2013
By Jovon
Wow, wow, and more WOW! Pactum really blew me away!

First off...did you SEE the cover? Impressive! Something that would definitely turn my head in a book store. I'm going to take a guess that on the cover you see detective Kaur up top pointing her pretty little number right at YOU, the reader, and down below her is Gabriel, the mage pointing something just as deadly if not more at you...his Vis empowered mind!

At first, while reading Pactum, I would think of Mariska Hargitay's character Olivia on Law & Order SVU, when I thought of Alison Kaur. After though, if it is Kaur on the cover, it fits her even better! I was really digging Kaur's character, too. I was really into all the characters! I thought each and every person introduced into the book was well written, consistent, and a world where their was magic (or Viz). In Pactum, you got a pretty good look at both Alison and her partner, Sean. You got to see a little more of what made them tick and I liked that not necessarily one character took over and stole the show. By the end of the book, I felt like I could be either be friends with all characters or hate them as the "good guys" do.

Ahhh, and Gabriel. How do I describe Gabriel? Specosam et potens (beautiful and powerful). Even though Gabriel has a school boy crush on another, I am really hoping, in the coming books, that Alison and Gabriel become a love interest. I got the vibe that Alison was a little smitten though it wasn't really written anywhere that she was. To be honest, I felt a little crush budding between them. I mean, they spent a lot of time together trying to save Denver and all! Gabriel seems deep and wise beyond his years...whatever his age is.

I loved Faith too.

3.0 out of 5 stars Decent August 7, 2014
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
All the old stories turned out to be true and the modern world now has to adjust to it all. An interesting concept, and adding a murder mystery into the mix, seemed a lot more interesting. It is perhaps not the most imaginative of stories, and much better written than a lot of the dreck that passes for urban fantasy nowadays.

Character development needed a bit more work; Hughes came across as a kind of cookie-cutter character and Kaur was a bit wishy-washy for a female detective. There was also a dearth of background information and a little bit of world building to integrate the magic with the nonmagic world. However, the biggest problem I had with the book was the speech patterns. This book is set in a modern day urban American city, but half the time the dialog reads like an early 19th century British novel. I've never in my life ever heard an American use phrases like "I dare say".

There is more work that can be done to improve the series, but all in all a decent read.

4.0 out of 5 stars Enjoyable read November 15, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
This was an interesting book. It was somewhat predictable, but not what I expected as far as character development. It is left open in the end for another book, that I will probably consider reading. The best way to describe this book is cop show meets that show grim on nbc. I enjoyed it and how the author put a new spin on some old stories.

4.0 out of 5 stars Magic May 2, 2013
By ELovely
Pactum reels you into a modern day story with a magical twist. With the world of magic only recently exposed to life as we know it, the characters in Pactum soon find that a homicide case is much more complicated than they realize.

The aspect of magic adds a level of excitement to your average crime solving story. It's interesting to see the dynamics of this in the blending together of two worlds. How each world has its part to play, and each character must learn that. I enjoyed reading this story and my only hold up is a section in the middle that slows just a bit, it's full of backstory and details but I found myself eager for the action again. However I was pleased to get wrapped up in the building events leading to the climax of the story, and soon forgot that I had felt the story slow just before it.

The sequels should be great, now that we know this new world better, it will be that much more exciting to experience the lives of these characters, both magical and human.

More About the Author

Hi, I'm Nick Taylor, I was born and raised in Denver, Colorado, possibly the greatest place on earth. I went to Dakota Ridge High and was in band-- that's right I was a band nerd and no, I don't have any cool "one time at band camp" stories, so don't ask.

I started writing in October of 2007. I was driving around with a friend and said "hey, I wonder if I can write a book." So I thought I'd try and write outline and see what happens. Well, I finished the outline and I couldn't just stop there. I needed to write chapter one and then that would be it. Do you see where this is going? Anyway, after chapter one was done, I had to finish the first book. But I wanted to get input as I went in order to write a better story. I decided to do a podcast of the first three chapters to see what people thought. After the first podcast, I decided that I wanted to continue to do it and more over, I wanted to get a larger listener base. It's all been a wonderful journey from there.
