Book Description

October 25, 1999 9 and up Paddington Bear
This treasury marks Paddington's 40th year in America, with a comprehensive collection of Sir Michael Bond's beloved stories. Peggy Fortnum's line drawings have been watercolored by her step-granddaughter Caroline Nuttall-Smith, who was not yet born when the books were first published. Since the Browns first discovered him at London's Paddington Station wearing a tag that read "Please look after this bear," Paddington's popularity has grown and his books have sold 25 million copies worldwide in 22 languages. The enduring appeal of this small bear from Darkest Peru ensures that he will be discovered by generations to come. Those well versed in Paddington's antics know that he does tend to make ordinary occasions more exciting. While readers of all ages may laugh as he bumbles from one near disaster to another, it is always a relief to find a happy ending.

Editorial Reviews

About the Author

Michael Bond purchased the original Paddington bear as a Christmas gift for his wife in 1956. A Bear Called Paddington was published two years later. At the time one reviewer said, "It should be compulsory reading for any child from six to sixty. Paddington is the funniest character in children's books for many years." Mr. Bond now lives in London.

The publisher's description and reviews neglect to mention that all of the stories in this collection have been abridged. The only reason I didn't give this book fewer stars is because I like the watercolored illustrations (which goes to show that not all changes are bad), and because Paddington is still enjoyable reading, even when edited down. I just wish they had published a color edition of the INTACT stories, or at the very least they should have made it clear upfront that entire chapters have been omitted.

3.0 out of 5 stars treasury of Paddington Bear November 23, 2008
Format:Hardcover
While all the Paddington stories are wonderful, an anthology of this size is too large for little ones to cuddle up with. Not enough pictures for little listeners. Single volumes would be a better bet.

5.0 out of 5 stars Please look after this bear April 15, 2000
By A Customer
Format:Hardcover
Paddington, a small bear from "darkest Peru," definitely needs looking after as he always finds himself in one sticky situation after another. I discovered P. only a few years ago. I had MEANT to read the P. books for YEARS, but somehow hadn't gotten around to it. After I finally read A Bear Called Paddington, frequently laughing out loud at Paddingtons' "situations," I immediately found the next three books, then the next three...

I am delighted that the Paddington books have now been bound in one volume and am equally delighted to be adding this to my collection.

My children love Paddington Bear stories. I loved being able to have so many stories in one book. Great reading before bed.

4.0 out of 5 stars Exerpts from many stories
Our 7-year-old granddaughter asked for a Paddington chapter book. Although she enjoys this (exerpts from many stories), it was not exactly what she was expecting.

2.0 out of 5 stars tasteless rubbish
