Great Planning Guide,

Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Paddling the Boundary Waters and Voyageurs National Park (Regional Paddling Series) (Paperback)
I love this book, I only wish it had more routes to ponder over. I like this book better then most others because it comes with a good preview map for all the routes it lists.

Needs updating, badly,
This review is from: Paddling the Boundary Waters and Voyageurs National Park (Regional Paddling Series) (Paperback)
Strengths: trip descriptions and maps are very useful. If this is all you are looking for in a guidebook, buy this book and you're done.
Weaknesses: Doesn't provide enough information on obtaining permits, etc, which is essential given the regulated nature of this area. All of the practical "how to" advice is entirely focused on canoes. Kayaks do not exist as far as this book is concerned. This probably reflects the author's generational bias, but is no longer reflctive of modern options. Though I personally was not seeking advice on equipment, given that this book does intend to dole out advice useful to the novice, it's time to look beyond canoes. In this same regard, the descriptions of appropriate clothing choices is decidedly 1950's. |
