If you love exploring Wisconsin rivers....this is for you!,

This review is from: Paddling Northern Wisconsin-Revised (Paperback)
I checked this book out from our local library in Green Bay and have subsequently asked for it for my birthday. This is a wonderful compilation of information, maps and helpful hints on a wide variety of northern Wisconsin rivers. Having just bought a canoe last year, my wife and I have poured over these pages looking for new possible places to explore in this wonderful state of ours. A trip that we've taken the past few years is noted in incredible detail in this book. It includes notes on remote islands which we camp on to which rapids are worthy of portaging around. (We're amatuers!). The author has done a wonderful job appealing to both rookies and more advanced paddlers by not taking anything for granted and explaining each bend and turn in superb detail. He also provides fascinating information on the history of the rivers and flowages he comments on. Overall, I must say this is a must for serious (and not-so-serious) paddlers. A great gift. (Hint, hint mom! )

A very much needed book. Finally updates "Whitewater/ Quietwater" with much better information and maps. Written extremely well with lots of interesting tidbits of river info. This book has become the one must have book for paddling in Northern Wisconsin. Mike's Paddling Illinois is due momentarily.

All The Information That You Need,
This review is from: Paddling Northern Wisconsin-Revised (Paperback)
I was happily surprised at the amount of information in this book. I was particularly looking for information on kayaking Wisconsin rivers that have few rapids. (recreational family touring)This book contained excellent maps, information on where to enter and exit rivers, areas that may need to be portaged, what types of rapids you will encounter (all the different classes of rapids), what you will see, etc. I am very happy with this book. I also purchased PADDLING SOUTHERN WISCONSIN: 83 GREAT TRIPS BY CANOE AND KAYAK.

Mike Svob has done a very good on this book, and has included a few new rivers, but the definative work still has to be the 1972 "Canoe Trails of Northeastern Wisconsin", by Wisconsin Trails Magazine, now long out of print. The maps are better, and the entire river is mapped, not just the turisty sections. If you are just going for a day or two, this is a good book, but if you want to travel a longer distance, find the original maps.

Questionable Ratings,

Exellent maps showing river sections, notable rapids and nearby roads. Descriptions of the river sections and of notable rapids are well-written and generally accurate. Some of the ratings of the rapids are questionable. Some rapids are rated as Class II which are not appropriate for an open canoe.

Sadly, and oddly, out of print,

This is an excellent guidebook to northern Wisconsin white and calm water rivers. I keep checking out the library copy since there are no inexpensive copies for sale. The 2007 revised edition shouldn't have disappeared this quickly. I assume it'll reappear soon...right?

This book is a great resource when looking for paddling trips in Northern Wisconsin. I have found it to be helpful planning trips to rivers we have never been kayaking on before. If you are a paddler in N WI this is a must have!
