What a trail guide should be, January 10, 2006
This review is from: Trail guide to Los Padres National Forest, Monterey Ranger District : Ventana Wilderness and Silver Peak Wilderness, Seventh Edition (Paperback)
This is exactly what a trail guide should be. So many guidebooks limit themselves to describing a few featured hikes, assuming that the reader is not capable of building his/her own itinerary. This book exhaustively describes the roads, trails, and camp sites of the Ventana Wilderness, complete with information on mileage, elevation, and the availability of water. It is a trail guide rather than a list of hikes. It is a "must-have" for any serious hiker who wants to explore the Ventana Wilderness.
As Arthur Simon mentioned, you should also refer to the Ventana Wilderness Alliance website (www.ventanawild.org) for up-to-date information on trail conditions, since the trails in this area are notoriously ill-maintained.
