5.0 out of 5 stars True to the Passionate Spirit of Paganini's Caprices !!! September 12, 2004
Verified Purchase
Eliot Fisk really took on one of the ultimate challenges of classical guitar in interpreting these dynamic masterpieces of the violin... Eliot succeeded in producing an amazing recording of Paganini's Caprices that captures that gypsy-esque "wild abandon" in the interpretation that is necessary for such flamboyant music... there are passages that are abit sloppy &/or rushed in Fisk's recording BUT even Perlman does this in his wonder-full renditions of these Caprices... to me, it is the passionate spirit of the interpretation that allows me to overlook whatever minor technical flaws in Fisk's playing in this recording... Fisk's understanding of the "feel" of these pieces keeps this fierce music from being boring & pedantic as i have heard in other interpretations of various Caprices... truly exciting listening & unique instrumentation !!! one of my alltime favorite acoustic guitar recordings !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

1.0 out of 5 stars A musical monstrosity February 6, 2008
Mr. Fisk's technique is formidable, but unfortunately, it leads him to do things because he can, rather than because he should.

This collection of transcriptions of the violin Caprices is, not to put too fine a point on it, dreadful (a violinist friend of mine used an even stronger word). Nor would anyone else likely have done much better — the music is just unsuited to the guitar.

However, you certainly get value in terms of the total time: it is 79'24".

I received a free copy of this item for review.

5.0 out of 5 stars fabulous February 14, 2013
The cd satisfied me very well, because the tone is so fabulous to show me that from a real guitarist. The cd is nearly brand-new except for the wrap.

5.0 out of 5 stars glad I bought it. February 1, 2010
By Richla
I am thankful I ignored the negative comments by several reviewers, and went ahead and purchased this CD.
It's brilliant and well done.
To each his own, but this is fantastic guitar, brilliantly interpreted and executed.

3.0 out of 5 stars Go Speed Racer January 22, 2002
Though technically well done I felt like I was on the race track at Indy. To me this recording was just an race against the metronome. These pieces were not written for the guitar and may not transcribe well no matter who does the work. This is one of the least played discs in my collection.

5.0 out of 5 stars This CD is incredible! September 10, 1998
By A Customer
I first got this CD when it came out in 1992, but lost it when my CD player was stolen from my office about a year later. I've been searching for another copy since then, and am buying one from Amazon today. I can't think of enough superlatives to describe this CD, but will say that it's thrilling, beautiful, and excellent. I have several others by Eliot Fisk, and enjoy them all; but this is my favorite.

5.0 out of 5 stars Daring and Groundbreaking February 4, 2011
By Vicki
5 stars for sheer daring, execution and preparation. When this first came out it stunned the guitar community, and I have to agree with the earlier review that stated those bashing this are mostly just jealous classical players who are even now still shocked that the easy old guitar chestnuts commonly played for the last 80 years or so are no longer cutting edge and will get little more than a yawn. Notice the bashers always use terminology that is a dead giveaway that they are terrified; a scared classical player will always criticize the tone and dynamics because those elements are completely subjective. The translation of those criticisms is: "That guy's a better player than I am, so I will lash out and try to invalidate his achievements". Don't let the haters keep you from experiencing this great work that broke new ground in guitar. Fisk deserves major kudos for breaking new ground and not falling into the drowse of repeating the Segovia repertoire ad infinitum.

5.0 out of 5 stars Brilliant and beautiful October 10, 2006
By dm
This is one of those rare instances where technical genius and artistry meet to create a work of art that is both brilliant and beautiful.

Fisk's playing is stellar, and the recording is crisp and clear. He plays all 24 caprices wonderfully, I am especially impressed with #5...I think I played it three times in a row.

Why is this no longer in print? Luckily I found it used for only $6, what a steal! Hopefully you can find it in the library and burn a copy...hey, if no label is going to publish this masterpiece...
