Editorial Reviews

Review

Third year medical student, UCLA Medical School I think this format is extremely useful for both upper class medical students as well as interns and residents. You can review long detailed discussions in textbooks in a matter of minutes. Each disease in one page is a great idea that to my knowledge hasn't been done in the past. 2nd year resident A one-page summary of important information about a disease entity is certainly something that especially students, and to a lesser degree, interns, would find very useful. I really like the way that the information is formatted, with easy eye access to different sub-topics. Too often, pocket references contain the needed information, but it takes too long to find it in several pages of verbiage. Students and interns are trying to juggle several patients at once, and may have only a few moments to review information before being quizzed by faculty. Certainly, the etiology, signs/symptoms, diagnosis criteria and treatment are of primary importance. Having the epidemiology and clinical course data handy will also be quite useful......Strengths include the easy and quick to read templated format, the inclusion of the most important (i.e., most frequently asked about) facts, and the inclusion of all the commonly seen disease entities. A book such as this is needed and sought after by students and residents. Second year medical student, George Washington University I think the format is a nice review page for quick retrieval. The book also seems comprehensive and ideal for interns starting in the hospital. Second year medical student, Michigan State University College of Osteopathic Medicine The way the pages are laid out is really nice and provides good information in a format that is fast and easy to read. I wish more books had this templated format.

More About the Author

Dr. Scott Kahan has published 14 books in the fields of medicine, nutrition, and public health. He is a medical physician trained in both Internal Medicine and Preventive Medicine, and completed a Master's of Public Health degree at Johns Hopkins University. Dr. Kahan currently serves on the Faculties of both the Johns Hopkins University School of Public Health and the George Washington University School of Public Health and Health Services. He is the co-Director of the George Washington University Weight Management Center and formerly the Associate Director of the Johns Hopkins University Weight Management Center.

Dr. Kahan's first books were a series of clinical texts for medical students, residents, and physicians called the "In a Page" series. He began writing these books as a result of feeling limited by the resources available in medical school and residency. According to Dr. Kahan, "I was extremely frustrated with the resources I was using. Half the books were just daunting -- it felt like I was reading a giant encyclopedia of medicine...pages and pages and pages about every nuance of every part of every disorder. I barely remembered anything I read. All the minute details obstructed the gist of the clinical scenario. The other half of the books were the exact opposite -- they simply offered a sentence or two about each disease or just an exam-type practice question; there wasn't enough discussion to sink my teeth around the topic, to gain any real understanding. The former led me away from the 'big picture'; the latter never helped me figure it out. I wrote the first book of the series hoping to find a sensible middle ground - a resource that would streamline the abundance of medical knowledge into a manageable nucleus, or as a resident once described it to me, 'a book that tells me exactly what I need to know so my attending won't think I'm an idiot!'

The In a Page series is designed to cover the most important clinical and board examination topics by presenting the "big picture" within an organized and visual 2-page layout. The books are pocket-sized so they can be toted around the hospital or clinic. They can be pulled out for reference after interviewing a patient, before attending rounds, or while studying. Most of the books are disease-based; each template presents the etiology, epidemiology, clinical presentation, diagnostic workup, and treatment - the "who, what, where, when, and why" - of a single disease. There are also two "Signs & Symptoms" books, in which each template presents the description, workup, and differential diagnosis for a single symptom or sign.

In all, there are a dozen "In a Page" texts covering most areas of clinical medicine and have been translated into nine foreign languages.

Following the final book in the series, Dr. Kahan collaborated with several physicians and dietitians to write a nutrition guide for physicians, which has been distributed free-of-charge to tens of thousands of medical students throughout the country. He is currently completing a public health textbook titled "Health Behavior Change in Populations," which will be published by Johns Hopkins University Press next year.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent series, March 28, 2004

This review is from: In A Page Surgery (In a Page Series) (Paperback)
No longer do I need to look up five or six different reference guides to find an answer about a specific type of sickness or disease. In a pragmatic sense, a very useful book with a wealth of information.

5.0 out of 5 stars I love this series, March 18, 2004
This review is from: In A Page Surgery (In a Page Series) (Paperback)
These books are so useful to use in rounds and clinics and especially for board review. They have probably been the best review books that I've used yet. I hope they come out with "In a Page" books on each sub-specialty.

This is a fantastic reference for residents and medical students. I especially found it useful in preparing for attending rounds, but it's also great for exam review. I'm very happy with this purchase.
