Real Musical Zeal,
By
This review is from: Pagin' Mr Jelly (Audio CD)
Hodes plays with a real musical zeal.
This music represents the unseen borderline between the plain simple blues and the sophisticated jazz J.R. Morton discovered and developed in his playing. Yet, I prefer Hodes interaction with other players. His steady style is a blessing for that matter. Every time I hear these solos I compare them to the Hodes Blue Note sessions, last seen and heard through Mosaic Records. They are something to worship and I hope Mr. Cuscuna will give it another chance for others to enjoy. It is the players cream de la cream of the period. There is some wonderful and powerful musical dialogues as Hodes responds to his friends gracefully.
