4.0 out of 5 stars Four Women on a Greek Island

This book is definitely readable -- short chapters, clearly identified povs. But I really felt it hard to feel connected to the four women -- really connected, that is. The timeline moves quite quickly and pov shifts often. I felt as though I was watching a play, and getting to know the characters on a surface level only. Still, the author has a nice writing style...

4.0 out of 5 stars Four Women on a Greek Island, October 29, 2004
This review is from: Paging Aphrodite (Paperback)
Four women - a Greek island filled with hunks - what can possibly go wrong? Plenty, if you consider what got them all to the island in the first place! 25-year old Kelah from London is dying to become a published writer. Maybe a beautiful island can help? Anya from San Francisco is convinced she is cursed in love - and after almost dying from an overdose, she has a choice: check into rehab, or go on vacation with her friend's sister Parker. Parker meanwhile has problems of her own - her husband of only 11 days has deserted her. So she decides, after some not-so-gentle prodding from her partner at the law firm, to go on vacation to a Greek island on what was supposed to be her honeymoon. 46-year old Claire Dillon from Australia also has man problems: her husband is cheating on her with a masseuse, her gay son hasn't spoken to his father in over 7 years, and Claire decides she needs to get away before she loses her mind.

Things don't quite go the way they are supposed to for these four women. Anya falls for a man who pined away for his ex-girlfriend, who has suddenly shown up on the island; Parker is very attracted to a man who refuses to let her be anything but a good friend; Claire finds that she still has a singing voice, and that she can have an affair with a very enigmatic singer named Andreas, who may not be as available as he seems; and Kelah discovers her best friend Boz may have more feelings for her than she ever imagined.

Join the four women in their struggle to find themselves, find peace, and perhaps find a few hunks on the tiny island of Corfu in Paging Aphrodite. Kim Green has thrown together the perfect recipe of sun, fun, love, angst, friendship and uncertainty in this book. I enjoyed it thoroughly, as the four main characters have a way of making you root for them.

There were many plot twists and turns in this book that really surprised me. If you are looking for a very unpredictable novel that will keep you reading until the very end - make sure to pick up a copy of Paging Aphrodite. You won't be disappointed. The characterization is excellent, the plot races along breathlessly, and the story is refreshingly distinctive. Highly recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars A cure for whatever ails you, May 10, 2005

Tamara Hanson (Calgary, Canada) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Paging Aphrodite (Paperback)
I'm quickly realizing what a great author Kim Green is and have now decided to become a Kim Green groupie. I read Paging Aphrodite first and absolutely loved it. The characters are very distinct, the writing is excellent and witty, and the story is set up in a way to keep you reading. Now I'm reading Is that a Moose in your Pocket? and I'm having a hard time putting it down to write my own chick lit novel. Extremely good!

5.0 out of 5 stars The Perfect Ending, October 30, 2005
This review is from: Paging Aphrodite (Paperback)
In this inquisitive novel four women find friendship, love and happiness. Destiny has never been more true in bringing these four very different people together.

Their lives change with each twist and turn. They find new loves and old ones, but always staying true to themselves. The Greek island provides beaches, night life and a chance to see their own lives from new perspectives.

This book is one of the best I've ever read, and trust me I've read many. The plot twists and interchanging stories make this for an eventful and interesting book that you will never get bored of. I hope you enjoy it as much as I did.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Summer Read!, May 6, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This is a great summer read! Kim's writing transports you to Greece. You can smell the salty ocean and feel the hot sun on your face with the warm sand between your toes. But more than that, her book is a wonderful account of taking risks in your life, getting away from it all, to find perspective and ultimately to find the true meaning of what makes you happy. I loved the characters and was swept away by kim's funny, yet moving, tale of finding yourself by losing yourself.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great take me away book, January 4, 2011

This review is from: Paging Aphrodite (Paperback)
I really enjoyed this book. It is a fun book to read and take yourself away. Part of the book is based in Greece, the description of the area and the people made me want to hop on a plane and go there. The women in the book are relatable and feel like real people. I think I read this in a day and a half. I would recommend her other books too, she is a witty author.

3.0 out of 5 stars Great Summer Read!, June 25, 2008

I read this book one afternoon I was home sick with the flu. Its about female relationships, reinventing yourself and finding out who you are. As a woman who has gone through a divorce and is contemplating another serious relationship, it was a quick reminder to never give up on your dreams and do what makes you happy.

5.0 out of 5 stars Island Paradise!, May 6, 2006
By
This review is from: Paging Aphrodite (Paperback)
What happens when four very different women reach crossroads in their lives and decide that, instead of facing the harshness of reality, they will run into the open arms of paradise? The result is a hilarious romp through the idyllic island of Corfu in Greece, where love is found, destiny is met, and friendships are forged.

Kim Green has created a cast of lovable characters. There is 46-year-old Claire Dillon, who has just discovered that her husband is having an affair. Parker Glass, the perfectionist, is recovering from a marriage that was anything but perfect --- lasting only eleven days. Desperately single Anya Soberanes believes she is cursed and will never find love. And finally, there's Kelah Morris, who thinks she will never become the novelist she dreams of becoming and will, in turn, forever disappoint her mother.

PAGING APHRODITE proves that sometimes you have to escape reality to find out what matters in life. This is a light-hearted and life-affirming novel that lifts the spirit and shows us that life can be as spectacular as an island paradise.

5.0 out of 5 stars Need a little girly vacation in Greece?, April 6, 2006
By
This review is from: Paging Aphrodite (Paperback)
This book was such a pleasant vacation for me...and I do mean vacation. I started to get caught up in the setting and the characters and at times, shortly after I'd put the book down to do something else, I'd think wistfully about the Greek summer sojourn I had going on over there in closed pages. This is chick lit doing what chick lit does best: entertaining, uplifting, commiserating and titillating all with a dash of fantasy to allow the readers some escape. It's a narrative told by the four main characters in alternating chapters. It's a device that when done well really works and when not done well confuses. I have to admit that in the first section of the book, I had a hard time keeping track of who was who and which who had which set of problems, but eventually I was able to get it down pat and enjoy myself. The characters, both and main and supporting, really grow on you and you'll be almost sorry to see everything work out and end. The story centers around Anya (a clinically depressed Chicana from San Francisco's Mission District who thinks she was hexed with a love curse) who is sent to the island of Corfu with her sister's friend, Parker (a post-nervous breakdown, pill-popping interior designer whose husband of 11 days left her to build houses in impoverished South America) and the two other women they become friends with, Claire (an Aussie housewife who gave up a burgeoning singing career to have a family with a man who just recently cheated on her) and Kelah (a young London writer of British and Jamaican descent with a myriad of family problems ranging from her brother in jail and her perfectionist editor mother). These four women who fled to Greece to escape their problems at home create an alliance and form a support group named The Seven Seeds of Persephone. And because we all read these kinds of books for some happy closure, they learn to face their fears of inadequacy, realize their worth and achieve their true goals during a summer in the small town of Pelekastritsa. Beach read, winter read dreaming of the beach...for whatever reason, season, whatever, this is well-written escapist entertainment.

1.0 out of 5 stars really disappointed, September 2, 2007
By
This review is from: Paging Aphrodite (Paperback)
I thought I would like this book, I was SO wrong. I don't mind 'beach reads' sometimes its nice to not have to think too hard about a story, but this book was awful. It is a really really basic story, almost non-existent. The characters are so predictable, its cheesy. I found myself cringing at the totally unrealistic story lines. The only intriging thing about this book was how the author got it published. It is cheesy predictable, and thats fine if its also fun, reading this was not fun at all. Read on the beach...if you want to fall asleep, thats all its good for. Really Awful.
