Like DJ Muggs, Planet Asia is a visionary. Raised in Fresno, California, Planet Asia eschewed the gangster rap stylings popular in his area and instead focused on developing his skill as a supreme lyricist. His work with likeminded rapper Rasco as the Cali Agents made Planet Asia one of the best of the new generation of Left Coast rappers, a distinction given more credence given his string of critically acclaimed albums and his Grammy nomination for his work with rapper Mystic on the song "W."
Now, Planet Asia is relishing the opportunity to work with someone as accomplished and stylistically similar as DJ Muggs. "I'm with somebody that's actually made platinum records and has had a successful career and he's telling me to do it the real way, which is how I've always wanted to do it," Planet Asia says. "It's a blessing. You don't get these types of chances. You usually get with a big producer and he wants you to do what's hot at that moment. A lot of these producers, they change with the times. DJ Muggs changes the times. There's a difference."

Probably the most underrated producer working today, Muggs never fails to deliver noise that is haunting, beautiful, and gritty. He's worked with some of the biggest names in the business -- B Real, GZA, the dudes from Mobb Deep, Kurupt, on and on -- but I'm of the opinion that no MC has ever really done his music justice. Not to say he doesn't get brilliant performances from almost everyone he works with. Pick up anything by the man, seriously.

Evokes the good ol' days of rugged Hip Hop,

From the very first moment of 'Pain Language', I knew I was in for a treat. Evoking feelings in me that have long since been dormant (since the nostalgic days of 'Enter the Wu'), 'Pain Language' feels like it should have been released in the 90s, yet it just came out in 2008! Chalk that up to DJ Muggs and his insane production, I guess. His old school Cypress Hill/old era Wu-Tang Clan style beats are straight out of the 1990s era of Hip Hop, with odd guitar loops, rugged beats and strange vocal samples. The production is mad tight! As for the vocals, Planet Asia is an amazing MC, and has no problem holding it down over Mugg's production. This is a true Hip Hop Classic, and highly recommended to all true Hip Hop heads, and those who have felt that recent Hip Hop pales in comparison to the greatness of the 90s.
