Book Description

May 27, 2011
At age 52, while in the privacy of her own home, Nancy Rector had a twenty plus man SWAT team break her door down with a battering ram and was arrested in front of her daughter and 5-year-old granddaughter and taken away to jail in handcuffs. Her crime? Purchasing a single order of pain medication online without a prescription. She ended up a convicted felon for doing nothing more than trying to survive an incredibly painful, debilitating, chronic illness for which no doctor would diagnose nor treat her as she had no insurance. This is her detailed story of what happened to her and how and why it can happen to anyone. We live in a country where freedom, individual rights and justice are held to be of extreme importance. A country on the cutting edge of science, medicine and technology, where the common social mantra is "We're Number One!" It is also the only industrialized nation in the world that does not provide healthcare for its sick and dying. In fact preditorial capitalism has made any type of healthcare option out of reach for millions of its citizens. This, in combination of an overburdened legal system, places its citizens in circumstances where justice, decency and humanity are lacking if not absence altogether.

About the Author

Nancy Rector is a wife and mother born in Pennsylvania and raised in Mesa, Arizona until her marriage to Roy Rivers at age 18. Nancy spent the early years of her marriage staying at home to raise their four children. When her two middle teenagers became involved in the Gothic subculture, which included runaways, drugs and other dangerous activities, her life took a dramatic change from its typical home and family agenda. That change led Nancy into many areas she had never envisioned being involved in. It also included some painful realizations, one of which was a government system set up to respond to problems rather than prevent them. With this revelation she became active in the community in raising awareness on certain youth issues which included being on the local television news and radio shows along with taking part on an A&E Investigative Reports cable television show concerning youth and the occult. It was also the catalyst to her starting college at age 39 to learn more about the criminal justice system and social issues. This desire to learn and spread awareness on a variety of topics never left her, though an unknown illness slowed her down for many years and resulted in the events taking place in this book. Nancy believes that much more public awareness is needed because of what is going on behind the scenes of many of the organizations we unthinkingly trust. Too many accept the blatant mistreatment by those who would manipulate society for profit. We’ve become a very apathetic society falling back on the beliefs and opinions of others rather than searching for the truth ourselves. Americans' need to demand more from themselves and from their government.

Shocking September 14, 2011
Format:Paperback
Who can read the author's story without being completely shocked at what happened that day in November. My next thought was if this can happen to Nancy Rector, this can happen to anyone! Without doubt, what happened the day of the raid is an outrage, and for that reason this is a book that had to be written. The world must know this story. It's tragic to see the dark side of the justice system, especially when a harmless, law-abiding citizen lands on the wrong side of "the law". The author's exposition of the SWAT "no-know warrants" was shocking. Her journey to jail and through the justice system was eye-opening. Because most Americans know so little about this system, the first-person perspective is invaluable. And with the current healthcare crisis on the nation's mind, her story is more timely and relevant than ever. That the author could weather such circumstances and not be bitter is commendable. Even more admirable is her ability to see the other side with an eye of understanding. Nancy, I sincerely thank you bringing your struggle to the light, and hope to see it make a change for the best.

Reading "Painful Truth" really hit home with me. I could not put the book down. It was very easy reading and it broke my heart to read the author's story. I have had numerous occasions to attend hearings, trials and pay visits to inmates at both the county jail and state prison. "Painful Truth" is a fitting title to describe what many are dealing with as they find themselves in a very painful predicament that they never dreamed would happen to them. Amazing, thought provoking and I would highly recommend this book to all readers.

So compelling September 21, 2011
Format:Paperback
I intended to read a few chapters at a time before bed. I opened the book... and never closed it until I'd finished it, in one sitting. This is a superbly written true story, and provokes much thought on weaknesses in our legal and health care system.
