5.0 out of 5 stars Good old Run & Gun Fun.
I'm normally not a big fan of FPS games but i have to admit, this one was fun enough to warrant completion. Absolutely chaotic, hordes of monsters to battle, very cool (end Bosses), an awesome arsenal of weapons(Roll the mouse wheel for quick & easy weapons switch-NO CUMBERSOME HOT-KEY SWITCH) and an item (Power *Tarot Cards) reward if you are clever enough to find them...

I will start with info I wish I had known before buying this game. This game is rendered in a way that creates a warped, slightly "fish eye lens" appearance on the screen. It gives me a pounding headache if I play for more than 20 minutes. It feels like I'm looking through someone else's glasses (thick ones), although the image is not blurry. 5.0 out of 5 stars Good old Run & Gun Fun., May 14, 2007
= Fun:5.0 out of 5 stars
This review is from: Painkiller Gold Edition (CD-ROM)
I'm normally not a big fan of FPS games but i have to admit, this one was fun enough to warrant completion. Absolutely chaotic, hordes of monsters to battle, very cool (end Bosses), an awesome arsenal of weapons(Roll the mouse wheel for quick & easy weapons switch-NO CUMBERSOME HOT-KEY SWITCH) and an item (Power *Tarot Cards) reward if you are clever enough to find them. I own a few FPS games and most of them i just gun through a few levels and get bored and move on to a more serious game such as a Fantasy 'R.T.S' or a 'D&D' type RPG.. but this one kept my intrest, must be the nostalga of playing the "OLD" DOOM games. I recommend this (BOX-SET) for those of you who sometimes just want to let off a little steam now and then-you know ('Bad day at work'/ 'Stressfull home enviornment') that sort of thing. Don't look for a compelling storyline- because there is'nt one, then again how many of these types of games actually have one?? The only game of this genre(my opinion only- so please all of you 'FPS FANS', don't leave nasty comments about the above statement-GO READ A BOOK) that I enjoyed for it's story and gameplay was "HALO",but oh course halo was a real exception to the rule. Oh, there is a comment from one of the reviewers about the game being shipped without the 'CD KEY'. My copy (new) has the key right inside the box in very LARGE BLACK print on a piece of paper, i guess if you buy it used you risk the chance of a (seller) forgetting to include it. Buy it new, it's only about $10-$15 dollars and you get the *expansion pak* as well. Stay away from the "BLACK VERSION" though as many have complained of strict copyright protection that forces you to go online to activate the game. This copy doesn't- just install and play. 5.0 out of 5 stars Great Game!!, May 18, 2005
= Fun:5.0 out of 5 stars
This review is from: Painkiller Gold Edition (CD-ROM)
I don't know what the other person was talking about. But what I do know is that the product key came with mine. It is just in a slip of paper, and you can easily loose it. It can drop out the box and slip away. So that is what probably happened.

I got my Gold Edition and I am enjoying it! The graphics and music are fantastic and the fights are brutal! Secrets are hard to figure though but it you are like me you have the patience to run around and look around.

The environment portraid in this game is amazing, this is my favorite part of the game, and it is also kind of creepy-but not DOOM 3 creepy- there is plenty of lights a and open space.

I recommend this version because it is less then buying the two version seperate, plus the expansion pack is even better though the opening videos of the main character was changed (don't know why they did that), but the fight scenes and environments are even more intense.

Enjoy!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Pure mindless fun, December 19, 2005

For those who demand deep, engaging storylines from their FPS games, Painkiller is not for you. For those who cannot stomach massive amounts of gore, Painkiller is not for you (the game is rated M for a reason). This game is INTENSE. It's impossible to keep your heart rate down when you are surrounded by enemies, running in circles and strafing just to stay alive. The enemies and environments are highly detailed, and the sound is incredible. Yes, the story is paper-thin, but that stops mattering when the bad guys show up. If you just want to play a straightforward run-and-gun FPS, this game will not disappoint you.

On a side note, I also received my CD-key with the game. I don't know what happened with the other guy's copy.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best FPS Since Doom III, September 1, 2007
= Fun:5.0 out of 5 stars
This review is from: Painkiller Gold Edition (CD-ROM)
This game absolutely rocks.

It's no crappy "Serious Sam" or "Red Faction." In fact, I dare say that parts of this are on par with Doom III (with better performance to boot). The graphics are top-notch, the engine is smooth, the weapons are creative, the monsters are incredible, and the gameplay is fast. If you want to shut your brain off and get your mouse-zen on with your pulse pounding for days on end (no lie), this is the game for you.

3.0 out of 5 stars Serious Sam meets Quake3..., February 13, 2006

I will start with info I wish I had known before buying this game. This game is rendered in a way that creates a warped, slightly "fish eye lens" appearance on the screen. It gives me a pounding headache if I play for more than 20 minutes. It feels like I'm looking through someone else's glasses (thick ones), although the image is not blurry. This alone ruins the game for me and is why I only gave it 3 stars rather than 4-5.
Besides the headache, the game has good graphics and excellent sound. There is pretty much non-stop action with no unraveling story line, conspiracy theories or science experiments gone wrong. Just one theme, get locked into an area, dump in a big bucket of monsters, kill 'em all and move on to the next area. It is fun with good weapons and an incredible variety of enemies. Cheat codes are plentiful and may be required at times unless you are a hardcore gamer.
Painkiller Gold edition is a bargain as it comes with both Painkiller and the Painkiller Expansion: Battle Out Of Hell, which is not clearly stated in the description.

My 16 yo niece loves it, I love it, and it's frustrating. All the cool and unusual weapons, god mode (~pkgod, weapons, ammo, etc), figuring out the weird ways to kill the various bosses... But, you can get stuck - moreso on the new levels than the original game. The original game on the disk is smoking hot gun fun! Pound it enough and you make it through, with plenty of challenging thinking, then, enable the challenges once you've got the gameplay down.

The add-on game died for me about halfway in some kind of keyboard overthought gymnastics. Stay with the original and have a blast or 300, and life is fun. I give this game a Go For It.

It's Serious Sam, in hell. In fact, it trims down the inputs a bit further by not having a crouch ability. One less function to get in the way of action!

The story is...irrelevant. Check out Yahtzee's ZeroPunctuation review. NSFW language, but that's all. Hilarious. This review is why I bought the game actually.

5.0 out of 5 stars I LOVE THIS GAME IT KEEPS YOU BUSY FOR A FEW DAYS, January 23, 2012

This is an awesome game for me even now that I'm a 35 y.o guy i love this kind of games FPS Absolutely awesome. Tons and tons of monsters which become more difficult to kill as long as you get passing through the levels, very cool end Bosses, impressive arsenal of weapons (Roll the mouse wheel for quick & easy weapons switch and an item (Power Tarot Cards) reward if you are clever enough to find them. I have played FPG games since I was 14 and I still love them. This game will keep you busy for a few days I recommend this set of games to those of you who sometimes just want to let off a little steam that sort of thing. Keep in mind for the people who talk about the game being shipped without the 'CD KEY'. My copy (new) has the key right inside the box in very LARGE BLACK print on a piece of paper with the manual and the 6 cds of installation. As the game is old, originally the games of this type came on Cd's because the Dvd's were not on the market yet but If you copy all the Cds in your computer, then you can burn into a DVD of 4 GB. and run the game (install) with no problem, just create folders for every disk and at the moment of the installation will ask you for the destination of the next disk you locate on the folder wherever you wanna called (in this case I put every folder with the number of the disks which belongs so locate the file will be easier (disc 2, 3, 4, etc..) then copy the files of every disk in the folder with the name of the disk. easy...
Now coming back to the Cd key for the people who bought the game and didn't have the Cd Key inside the game, that might be because if you buy it used, you risk the chance of a (seller) forgetting to include it. Buy it new, it's only about $10-$15 dollars and you get the expansion pack as well. Very recommended game in my opinion.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Fun for a Great Price, March 1, 2011
= Fun:5.0 out of 5 stars
This review is from: Painkiller Gold Edition (CD-ROM)
It comes on 6 CD's, which are not needed to play the game. It takes a while to install, but it is worth the wait.
It is an old-fashioned monster spam murderfest like Doom and Duke Nukem. Run around and kill hordes of ugly things with an array of very interesting weapons. You can make a murder with a stake gun that pins enemies to walls, a minigun+rocket launcher combo, or a gun that shoots both shurikens and lightning.

The plot isn't that great and doesn't show itself too much, but the gameplay more than makes up for the lack of story. Who needs a reason to kill hordes of demons anyways?

Great game, I highly recommend this game to anyone who is tired of boring cover based "realistic" shooters that have flooded the store shelves recently.

What's not to like about this game? Endless waves of demons, crazy awesome metal battle music, and a gun that shoots shurikens and lightening. This game is more or less something to pass time when debating about what game to play. The story isn't all that great but who cares. You feel like a super being running around with crazy weapons killing everything that moves, it is probably one of the most fun games to play. Just don't expect any sort of in depth character development or vast, beautiful worlds. There are demons...kill them.
