Product Description

Evil has returned! Demonic powers are manifesting themselves as a myriad of dark creatures, fighting over the fates of imprisoned souls caught in Purgatory. Once again, it is up to Daniel Garner, in the unenviable position of being the Curse of Darkness and the Toy of Light, to fight his way past hordes of demons and fiends. Questions remain. "Can he stop the powerful creatures that stand in his way? Will he ever leave the hell of Purgatory and be reunited with his wife Catherine?" Painkiller Hell & Damnation is a fast-paced, thrilling modern remake of an all-action shooter Classic!

4.0 out of 5 stars Oldschool January 2, 2014
Format:Video Game|Verified Purchase
I heard of this game after watching Zero Puncuation's review of it, and he made it sound awesome. And it is, to a point. It's like the oldschool shooters like Doom and Duke Nukem, but with a semi-modern polish. The campaign isn't very long, and there isn't much complexity to it, but it sure is fun. There's no inventory management, no collection of resources, no quick time events; there's not even a reload button. Just you and the enemy. A fun time for what it is.

There are several multiplayer modes, but at the time I was playing there was no one else online. I figure it will likely be the same for a while. If you've got a friend to buy it and play coop awesome, if not don't hope for a thriving online community.

4.0 out of 5 stars It's good, but don't expect it to be true to the original December 18, 2014
Format:Video Game|Verified Purchase
Game is fun and I love the 2 player co-op. has vertical split screens instead of usual horizontal which allows more to be seen. Fun watching the other player. The flow is not the same as the original Painkiller though which is very disappointing. It maintains some of the same monsters and settings, but isn't the same at all. It's like they combined a lot of it and created a condensed version where it overlaps. There were some very classic moments in the original. But this version loses that magic and atmosphere. The boss battles are even different and some of the puzzle in defeating them has been replaced with just shooting them constantly til dead. Even the graphics and rag doll effects the original made a key component have been simplified. I used to play the original and battle out of Hell on my PC and it was beautiful to see the detail of environments and physics when a monster would topple over or fly in the air with the rag doll effect. It's much more basic now and while it still looks good, it's lost a lot of it's shine. If it wasn't for the addition of the co-op I would say it was a failed attempt to bring a classic to the PS3. But since I can now run around and destroy things with a partner, it picked up a new dimension that adds a whole lot. As a remake, it's not true to the greatness of the original. As a stand alone game, it works for different reasons and still retains some of the good things. But the stuff they compromised on takes it down a star for me.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great oldschool FPS! June 10, 2014
Format:Video Game|Verified Purchase
For many years now, I've played more and more RPGs and have become accustom to having to multi-task and think more when playing a game. So, when I started playing Painkiller, I was not too excited and quite bored. That lasted for the first few sections. After that, I started to remember how fun it could actually be to just run and gun, and not have to think too much or at all. This game is exactly what Duke Nukem Forever should have been. Like the description says, it's a modern remake of the classic shooter. You blast your way through tons of enemies with a large list of guns and have to pick up health packs to save yourself. No potions or inventory, no regenerative health, just good 'ol fashion health packs. You only start out with one gun but quickly gain more and more. They're all pretty unique and enjoyable to use. The only 'upgrades' you get are in the form of tarot cards which are bought with coins that you find by blasting certain boxes and other items. They can slow down time, decrease damage received, etc. It's a somewhat quick single player campaign but it's action-packed the whole time. Overall, the ammo and enemies are plentiful, the bosses are huge, and it's everything fans of the old FPSs, like Doom, have been looking forward to for awhile.
