5.0 out of 5 stars keeps getting better!
I swear, since Tommy Castro and his band signed to Blind Pig they have actually gotten better. This is another superb release. He sounds good with horns and they are very prominent on this CD. It is more soul than blues, which suits me fine as that is his strong point. Good songs, good special guests, a tight band; this Cd has it all. Just as when you see him live, this...

2.0 out of 5 stars Peaked too soon?
I'm sorry, but Tommy Castro will probably never better his first album, Exception to the Rule. I was deeply disappointed after the exit of original drummer Shad Harris, but Castro did come back with the decent Right As Rain. But other than that first album, everything is hit or miss. And what's really missing on this album are his incredible guitar licks and throbbing...

5.0 out of 5 stars Best TC to date, March 21, 2007
This review is from: Painkiller (Audio CD)
I really think Tommy Castro has arrived as one of the best on the Blues scene today. Pain Killer is clearly his best effort to date. Most notably one should notice the work of Keith Crossan And Tom Poole (The Healthy Horns).

5.0 out of 5 stars Painkiller - Tommy Castro, March 29, 2007
This review is from: Painkiller (Audio CD)
I had a chance to see Tommy perform at a local venue, he played a couple of songs from this album that sounded great. At the time the cd was not available in stores, just his website, which was autographed if bought from the website. Anyhow, after hearing the couple of songs live, I bought the cd and loved it. I'm glad to see the cd is doing well.

Tommy's best. Alot of Delbert influence in his music on this CD. Great blend of horns and blues guitar. I've enjoyed Tommy's music for some time now, stumbling across a performance of his when I was in San Diego in 1998. His music has improved and this CD has provided the goods for me to turn more ears here on the east coast. Not a bad song on this CD.

Facebook gives me a chance to talk to musicans. Debbie Davies kept going on about this cat-Tommy Castro. So I picked out this album, and it's a good one. "Im Not Broken" is a good mix of horns, keyboards & guitar. The title song, "Painkiller" is written by Castro and gives us a bite of his talent. His cover of Albert Collins' "A Good Fool Is Hard To Find" is pure blues, cold women & foolish men. The last three songs are written by Tommy, and again show his ability to not only write but play good tunes. Thanks Debbie Davies.

Tommy and the band does not disappoint on this album. They sound better than ever and sound even better live. I have been listening to Tommy for 20 years and he just gets better with age and experience. Some of my favorites on this album are I'm Not Broken and I Roll When I Rock. If you want an album to raise your spirits and get you rocking purchase Painkiller. For extra credit buy Live at the Fillmore and enjoy their live show.

Tommy Castro has been a staple on the American blues circuit for well over a decade now and has carved out a loyal following. His brand of soul inflected blues owes as much to James Brown as it does to John Lee Hooker. Castro is a good guitarist with a nice voice. "Painkiller" is another strong album for Castro. 9 of the 12 tracks are originals with covers of Albert Collins, Freddie King and Mike Schermer thrown into the mix. Highlights include "Love Don't Care", "Painkiller", "A Good Fool Is Hard To Find" which is a cool duet with Coco Montoya and "It Ain't Easy Being Me". Castro's brand of soul inflected blues may not be for everyone, but he does what he does very well and this is another fine release from Tommy and the band.
