Old School "Run & Gun",
= Fun:4.0 out of 5 stars
This review is from: Painkiller Triple Dose (Painkiller, Painkiller: Battle out of Hell, Painkiller: Overdose) (DVD-ROM)
The first two chapters of the Painkiller Universe pack are the story of a man and his wife who get into a car accident and die. The wife goes to heaven, the man to limbo. There he is contacted by an angel and told there is a way for him to earn his way into heaven to be with his wife: Be God's hitman.
Apparently there is a coup in the works in Hell and assassinations are required to maintain the balance of order. The man agrees to this task for the sake of love. The angel says "awesome", hands him a weapon that's a blade on a stick and says, "Get to work". Or at least that's pretty much what happens. Hell is made up of several areas which present themselves as alternate versions of earthly locations. There are monastaries, forests, middle eastern temples and even a military base. All these carry different aspects of their dark sides and are appropriately twisted by the demon who resides in them. The base is rusted and industrial with lots of spikes and dread. The forest is really dark and spooky with plenty of things rusltling throughout. The gameplay itself is standard running around and killing lots and lots of things. It's not bad by any means, it's just really high action. For anyone looking for a grittier version of "Serious Sam" or something that harkens back to the days when a body count was the point, this will be a welcome return. There is a story set up and the scenery and motivation are all properly there, but it's about ending existences. The weapons are very cool and multi function. You get the blade on the stick (Named the Painkiller) that fires and recalls the blade as a secondary attack. A steak driver with a grenade launcher secondary. If you fire both together you can launch a grenade on a stake. There's a gun that shoots shurikens..../and/ Lightning!...and if you fire together?... A lightning charged shuriken. There are several more like chaingun and such and there is a system of placable backup abilities called "The Black Tarot" that gives you the chance to add things like points multipliers, status effects and extra damage. As a perk of the job the hitman even receives the ability to transform into a demonic/hybrid form and just tear through things, but it's based on a number of kills and can go off at the wrong times. The "Battle out of Hell" expansion continues the main story and the "Overdose" pack follows a demon on much the same quest with his own array of funky weapons. I had a 4 star time with this. It isn't high art or an attempt to tell the great American novel in game form, but there is plenty of enjoyment to be had here. The set up was intriguing and you get plenty of heavy firepower and lots and lots of enemies to use it on. I gave it the extra star because it is all three chapters for a very low price.

This game is not another exercise in story-driven FPS, no, this is an adventure in crazy tricks and awesome destruction of monsters, ranking up there with Doom2 and Serious Sam.
If that isn't your cup of tea then this game won't do you any favors, but if like me that IS your cup of tea, you're in for a treat. The game allows you to replay any level as many times as you like and each level has a challenge to complete (find the holy items, or destroy absolutely every breakable object, or complete the level without armor, etc) which unlock cards (which modify gameplay in fun ways, like slowing time and making you do more damage). As if that wasn't enough, the game's real thrills are in the excessive tricks you can pull off, this is a game where bunnyhopping is expected and encouraged, you will be flying around the levels doing the craziest things (like spinning a giant weed-whacker that chops up monsters as you leap around crowds of monsters). Even the weapons are exceptionally cool - for example the rocket launcher + minigun, the shotgun + freeze gun, the stake launcher + grenade launcher, and everyone's favorite the electrodriver - which shoots shurikens and lightning (and can even fire a shuriken charged with lightning that kills everything in an area if it hits an enemy). The game even rewards you for juggling ragdoll bodies in the air! Overall a very fun game with significant replay value, and an entirely unique experience.

This is a good shooter game. Graphics are pretty good. Story line is decent. I like the straight forward flow of the game. No need to go back and forth between rooms or levels. It's always a forward flow. If you like shooting bad guys, blowing things up, breaking things and generally reeking havoc, you will like this game. Plus there is the benefit of getting three games in one package. You get the original game, an expansion pack and a standalone expansion all for 20 bucks. The game ran fine on Vista for me but I do have an upgraded PC. The game gets a buy it recommendation from me. Hope you enjoy it as much as I did!

Painkiller OVERDOSE installs the Securom spyware on your machine. To get rid of it Google trashreg and unlocker, two programs that can get Securom off your machine. On top of this OVERDOSE has the most annoying voice-over of any game I've ever planned! I uninstalled it after about a half-hour, your character babbles like a teenager trying to sound cool constantly, it gets old real fast. First two Painkillers were fun, OVERDOSE is awful, but when you add spyware to the mix this becomes a package to avoid at all costs.

This is a great game for you FPS fans out there. The style is similar to that of Quake. The only problem is this game is dead now days. The community does not exist for it unless you are a superstar player and know which IRC channel to idle in. I bought this mainly for the nostalgia, and because it was cheap and comes with the expansions. Shipping was really fast too!

A great anger reliever. After you kill a certain amount of mobs you go berserk for a bit. You hear nothing but white noise, everything slows down, you see darkness except the glowing souls of those around you. One shot and those guys explode into paste. An awesome game where you mow down anything in your way. The game looks great even though its quite a few years old. The level designs and monsters are wonderful giving you a nice comic book feel. If you enjoyed the first F.E.A.R you'll love this.

I have played many FPS's in my day, but none have been so ridiculous. This game is just a large amount of fun with a large rainbow of very unique weapons. The enemies are all creative and very nice to look at, even for an older game.
The price is right for three great games, even though two of them are expansions. I haven't gotten to playing them all yet, but I'm sure they won't disappoint. A sequel just came out, so if you like this you should pick that up.

Overdose is an epic update of an epic game. If you did not like the previous game, this one will not necessarily appeal, but it has lots of replayability tied up in the Tarot system.
