Book Description

Barron's Painless Series
Just about everybody knows that fractions are parts of a whole number--but how many of us remember the difference between a numerator and a denominator? Or know quite what to do with them? Painless Fractions was written especially for middle-school students, but can be helpful to just about everybody. (Let's face it: we all make occasional mistakes with fractions.) The author takes a light-hearted approach to teaching fractions. She defines all terms, then demonstrates the correct methods of addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division of fractions, and shows how to convert them into decimals. Puns, puzzles, and "brain ticklers" add an element of fun to the process of mastering fractions. There are answers to all questions, and plenty of good advice for avoiding pitfalls when calculating with fractions.

Second Edition

Really. This isn't going to hurt at all . . .

You already know the most important thing about fractions: every fraction is a part of a whole number! From this point on, it gets even easier--just as long as you take it slowly, step by step. You'll learn how to find the lowest common denominator, then how to add, subtract, multiply, and divide with fractions. Along the way, you'll find puns, puzzles, and "brain ticklers" that add fun to the way you learn. By the time you reach the end of this book, you'll wonder why you ever though fractions were difficult. Every problem presented in this book comes with complete explanations. You'll also find good advice to help you avoid pitfalls when you're calculating with fractions. New in this edition is a list of websites that you can visit to learn more about using fractions.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best Math Book I ever read! and bought!, March 14, 2001
By A Customer
This review is from: Painless Fractions (Barron's Painless Series) (Paperback)
I am a College Gradaute, and I must say I never Learned Math as good as I should have back when I attended public school I always had inept teachers that did not know how to teach math, this has made my math skills weak. Recently I purchased Painless Fractions, by Alyece Cummings, Laurie Hamilton(Illustrator), I learned more from reading this book than I have from attending public school from grades 3-12. The author of this book talks in plain english about fractions and math, very easy for anyone to understand, also a very helpful study aid. I have used this book to study for exams for school and work and found it to be very helpful, In addition I must say that the Cartoons are very cute and are a great touch to the book. I feel that this is a Math book for anyone that wants to learn Math or needs some extra help with Math. I think it is fantastic. Very Well written. I would have to say that it is the best Math book I ever bought, it was a great investment for me.

I would recommend this book to children struggling with fractions, or even to adults who struggled with fractions when they were learning them as kids. The author makes it about as simple as it can be made. The only thing better would be to hire a private tutor. If you go through this book one step at a time, and practice at each level, you should learn a lot. I bought this book because I started a math club at my son's school. I plan to let the children borrow it as needed.
