Book Description

Barron's Painless April 1, 2001
Reading and writing poetry as a class assignment can be a rewarding experience--especially when it's approached in a spirit of fun. This book explains how poets use words imaginatively in rhymed and metered verse as well as free verse. Poems can be humorous or serious, long or very short, joyful or sad--and this instructive, yet fun-to-read book points the way toward composing and reading poems of all kinds. It's filled with examples from Homer through today. All titles in Barron's Painless Series are written especially for classroom use for middle-school students.

Editorial Reviews

From the Inside Flap

(back cover)
Really. This isn't going to hurt at all . . .

If you're convinced that you hate poetry, or if you think poems are dull and difficult, you're likely to change your opinion when you open this book. The author explains many different ways of writing poems, and presents examples that show how poetry includes exciting stories that grip your imagination, the lyrics of your favorite songs, and many other forms of verbal expression that are recognized as poetry. You'll learn fascinating ways to read and evaluate many different kinds of poems, and you'll also discover the pleasure of writing original poems of your own. But most important of all, you'll discover that far from being dull and difficult, poetry is fun!

For Middle School and High School Students --This text refers to an alternate Paperback edition.

I love the painless series and use it to augment my granddaughter's education. We use homestudy, study over the internet and extra sources to give her a well rounded education. I can recommend this highly.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Book!, September 5, 2011

This is an excellent book to use as part of literature or just for poetry. We've been homeschooling for 7 years and I was a teacher for 30 years. I found this book to be a fantastic resource to use in finding the right poems as we were preparing for CLEP Analyzing and Interpreting Literature exam (early college credits). It is full of the classic, funny, entertaining plus famous, well known poetry. It's also packed with literary elements, explaining forms of poetry and then connects them directly to poems. It would be very useful for AP lit exam prep, too (if your child prefers pencil exams over using keyboard (CLEP) exams). Also great price over the textbooks used when I was teaching. I've recommended it to homeschoolers and public and private school teachers. Thanks, Mary Elizabeth!
