2.0 out of 5 stars More of an attaboy for the author than good info for the new artist
I was looking for a book that demonstrated BASICS on painting techniques such as palette selection, brush loading and stroke techniques. All he showed or described were single photos and one short paragraph on the topics I wanted. This was certainly not sufficient to launch me confidently into the area of landscape art. Painting and drawing skills are acquired by...

I've painted on and off for several years. Until yesterday, my mom had never picked up a paintbrush in her life. We put this book in between us and neither one of us had any trouble following the instruction.

Jerry Yarnell uses acrylic paints but we use oils and still found this book to be very helpful. He guides you step-by-step in everything from sketching your scene onto the canvas to adding the last highlight. He even tells you what paints to mix, brushes to get and strokes to use.

The pictures in this book are incredible and you can paint houses, snow, landscape...even cows! I've truly found this book to be more useful than the professional painting class I'm currently in!

5.0 out of 5 stars Great first painting book!, February 13, 2002

This review is from: Paint Along with Jerry Yarnell Volume One - Painting Basics (Paperback)
I have always had some artistic skill but I never painted a picture before picking up this book. I am amazed at the results. For the first two projects I bought cheaper canvas board instead of pre-stretched canvas because I assumed the first few paintings would be hit-or-miss at best. But the very first lesson I did from the book got scooped up by a brother-in-law and is framed and hanging on his wall! I've got more requests than I can fill now and some are hanging in a local restaurant (for sale!) A big thanks to Jerry and a hearty recommendation to anyone who wants to try painting in acrylics. He will walk you through everything from tools to paint to finishing touches. One dissapointment was no seascapes! I've had two requests for them. I recommend this book over Bob Ross'. There are no knives or tricks used here and the effects are more artistic.

If you are familiar with Jerry Yarnell from his PBS series, you will most likely enjoy this book. If you are a rank beginner, it might not be the best book, because you do not get to see a demonstration of just how it all works, but if you've seen even a couple of his TV shows or ever painted before at all, you can gain excellent insight into the basics of landscape painting. It is full of step by step instructions for painting a good variety of landscapes, from woods and water to deserts and stormy skies. It is short on words, big on pictures, telling you what to objects to paint, in what order, which brushes and techniques to use, with several excellent photographs per painting of each step involoved to produce each painting. I would hightly recommend this book to anyone interesting in landscape painting.

This is a great book with simple steps to follow. I'm an oil painter "trying" out acrylic painting. This was my very first acrylic book. I was not disappointed (except I paid (more) at the bookstore for mine)... This is a good book for any beginner to begin with.

Yarnell makes it easy. He covers everything including materials and terminology. The step by step leasons are easy to follow and provide a wealth of information from which you can build your own skills and learn the basics to experiment on your own. I would also suggest Yarnell's videos, one in particular covering techniques so that you can actually see what is going on.

5.0 out of 5 stars Outstanding!, April 18, 2006

I am a big Jerry Yarnell fan. He is an excellent teacher and it really shows in his instructional books. I had the good fortune to attend one of his workshops, and really learned a lot. I expect to be able to continue to learn from these books.

From what I can tell, the books do not have to be followed in a specific order. I have the first four volumes in the series. What I plan to do is to work on the techniques presented in this first volume and at that point, I'll just pick paintings from his other books that I like.

The paintings are selected to help you develop specific techniques that will be of good general use and he gives step by step instructions and includes color photographs of the paintings at each stage to give you an idea of what each step should look like.

He gives instructions for mixing the colors required at each step too. He doesn't give an exact formula for the colors since brands and grades of paints vary so much. What he does do is to give you the colors and a relative idea of how much to use of each. You then can develop your eye by mixing until the color looks right. It doesn't take long to figure it out and it is much better for developing your color mixing skills than a rote formula.

Jerry also uses a limited number of colors in his palette. This really help with developing you color mixing skills too. He tell you what brushes you need and how to use them as well.

If there is another set of instructional books that is better than these, I haven't found them.

If you go to his web site [...] and click on Books, you can see slide shows of the paintings that are taught in each book. This will give you a better feel for which ones you want to try.

4.0 out of 5 stars To get the most from this book...., February 7, 2008

I have already worked through half of the projects in this book and am amazed at the detail and finished quality I have achieved.
One thing I would highly recommend is to get hold of at least one of Jerry's instructional DVDs as well. I found that once I had watched him using the techniques he describes in the book, a light clicked on in my head and the books became an even more valuable resource.
If you want to learn acrylic painting or improve your skills by discovering some of the tricks or secrets experienced artists use, then this book is an essential addition to your library.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Insight and Motivation, June 16, 2008
This review is from: Paint Along with Jerry Yarnell Volume One - Painting Basics (Paperback)
Jerry Yarnell is a versatile and talented painter who has written a number of excellent "how to" books and this one is as good as the rest. Just looking at his beautiful work is enough to provide motivation and inspiration.

The book is divided into several interesting projects / paintings, each of which is supplemented with step-by-step instructions that show how to develop the painting.

A beginning painter will find the insight offered by the the instructions to be invaluable in deciding how to choose a brush, mix paints, apply paint to the brush, execute a brush stroke for a specific purpose, and countless other fundamentals.

It is not expected that the student's painting will be a replica of the master's. But the vast knowledge imparted here by Mr. Yarnell will help any interested and properly motivated person peer into the mind of a great painter and benefit from the wisdom of his life of devoted and passionate artistry.
