Book Description

The tin-roofed farmhouse off County Road 43 doesn't whisper. It talks. It even fusses occasionally. At times, it contains a cacophony of Southern voices, at times a symphony. It is rarely quiet because it is a home ... and, it is haunted.

Most of the houses and homes, farms and fields, and barns and businesses of Snow, Virginia (population 362), are haunted, but only one man can see and hear them: house painter Jacob Beauford. The foggy day Jacob tries to match paint to old photographs and a faulty memory in Widow Sparks' sitting room, his entire world changes because Jacob becomes part of a world he didn't know existed--the world of the shades.

And they are more than happy to talk to and appear for him, scaring the bejeesus out of Jacob Beauford, house painter for the dead.

Paint is a multicultural ghost story where the walls not only have ears--they have bodies, eyes, hands, and even lips.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful Story March 4, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
This is a great story and I loved it. One of the things I really like about Amazon ebooks is that you can try out new authors by reading one of their free selections. That's what this was and I'm really glad I downloaded it. The story itself is entertaining and the editing is excellent, making it a pleasure to read. This is a long book and may seem to move a little slow in places, but the characters are so well-developed that you find yourself caring what happens to them and that keeps you turning the pages. I read the whole thing in about ten hours. I kept waking up in the night and reading "just a few more pages".

In this story the main character, Jacob, suddenly finds that he can see and hear ghosts, or "shades", and he also discovers that there are a lot of them around. As a matter of fact, they far out number the living in this tiny, little southern hamlet. Into the mix comes Melissa, Jacob's childhood best friend and first love, who is escaping from an abusive husband with her infant daughter. Add ghostly parents, sinister spirits, ex's that just don't get the message, and raging hormones and the fun ensues - among both the living and the dead!

This is a really good read and I can't recommend it highly enough. One word of warning - if you're easily offended by politically incorrect language there are a couple of places where african american's are referred to in the way that they would have been in the deep south during the civil war era. The character using the language is a malevolent, vile spirit from that era so it fits in with how he would have spoken and is not excessive.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic story! April 19, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I absolutely loved this book. I got it on a lark because my husband is a housepainter and I thought he'd get a kick out of a story about a painter who sees ghosts - but it turned out to be much, much more than just a ghost story. I've always enjoyed paranormal stories and this one did not disappoint. The "ghostly" characters are unforgettable and the love story touched my heart. I highly recommend this book.

I loved this book. First, because it's so very well written. Funny, charming characters. Unusual reactions to life. Vivid personalities. Second, the ghosts and all their rules are so entertaining. I loved their 'paint' highways, their quibbling and busybodyness. Who would have thought? And third, it's a unique story, so you're frequently surprised and delightfully taken aback. Other than being a bit longer than it really needs to be (it has places where it feels like it's done, but then starts up again), it's just about a perfect book, in my opinion.

3.0 out of 5 stars Difficult to say... December 4, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
This was a mostly well written book with certain portions that were interesting. The book is very original and that does earn it some points in my opinion, but for the length of this book, the gusto I had hoped for just wasn't there. No matter how good of a writer the author is or how dedicated of a reader I am, if there are frequent slow spots in the book I am going to lose interest. When you combine that with a book that is above average length, I find it hard to keep motivated enough to read without distraction. I think if some sections of this book were polished by removing the stuff that was extra and only leaving the meat of the story, this book would have been a five star read. As is, this book is not bad by any means, it just could use a little time on the cutting room floor. I like the author's writing style and respect the subject matter, I simply think it needs a little reworking to live up to the potential it has.

I couldn't wait to get to my Kindle Fire each day to read more of this delicious story. The characters were well defined and stayed true to their definitions. I was not ready for it to end. I will be checking out other stories by this author!

5.0 out of 5 stars Is this author also J.J. Murray? September 19, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I really loved this book. The concept was at first hard to grasp, but the author gave the story life. The one thing that I am curious about though; is whether this author is using the pseudonym of H.M. Mann but happens to also be J.J. Murray? The reason I ask this is because the author used Ruth and Dewey from the book Something Real in this story. At first I thought I was just imaging it, but when the names Tee, and Dee came up I knew it was the same set of characters. Maybe this book was a collaboration of two authors'. (IDK)! I loved the added surprise of hearing about characters I've already read.

4.0 out of 5 stars Loved the concept November 29, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Okay, I can't say I'm a fan of paranormal stories but I enjoyed this one. Who wouldn't want to see lost loved ones, or historic town figures, or even relatives so far back that you never heard of them!!! Now toss in a romance, a bit of town mystery and you have a well rounded story with great characters. I really like this author and would encourage you to give his books a try. This was my second one and I plan to read more. He really knows how to develop characters, emotions and settings.
